Admin Usernames

So I got to thinking, how many of you get bugged when you see an admin create a forum and use a username like "hotdawg123", with numbers and other things.

Not sure what it is about it, but for some reason it just makes me feel like the admin is a spambot. Efc2009 is fine, because it changes with the year. You dont see Fowler4343263264726347237463243324333 though.

I always use Ghost whenever possible, and if thats taken I usually use LeoGhost or something of the matter.

I am with Fowler how the username reflects the members personality. That reminds me on my forum my username is 300zx. Some people may think I like the car and others may not know what it stands for.

I use Admin as my username on my forum so people know I'm the admin. I get the point that you can't tell personal stuff about the user from that, but that's what signatures are for.

Nowadays it's common for forums to assign different groups different colours, so they can be identified by the colour of their username. Of course, only newer softwares support this, older ones such as phpBB 2 require a MOD or add-on.

Interesting topic you bring up here Ghost. I like seeing forums where the admin's username is either their real name or a nickname of theirs, it gives the impression they like to interact with the community. On the other hand, I can't stand it when admins keep with the username "Admin" or "Webmaster". For me this shows they want to emphasize their position of authority.

I'm fairly sure if I ever become admin here (or anywhere else for that matter) I'll change my username back to Christian. ~smile~

^Decent point as well, the personal factor. I plan to legally change my name to Leo Ghost within the next two years, so mine will probably always be Ghost.

For me, Ghost fits. Everyone I know online already calls me it, and even my real life friends do as well. I have never liked my real name (Craig and a long last name) so I knew i'd change it at some point.

I'm not sure if I agree with the personal factor. I have always preferred not to tell too much about me to complete strangers, not just for the security, but because most people couldn't care less. Sometimes new members will see that and think it will be indirectly required (peer pressure of sorts) that they give away some personal details.

Well, some people user other websites which aren't forum based, and they may have many accounts there, so names aren't as widely available as they are on forum software. As they get used to them, some decide to use them on regular forums too.

I'd rather not people register with the name 'admin', but it doesn't get on my nerves really.

I for one actually don't care what Admin's or anyone has as their username, it is their username afterall. If they have Admin then that is because... well they are the administrator. I don't see how having a number after a username makes you think its a script of some kind, the only time I would think it is a bot or something is if the name was set to 'hgehghejfhdfge' or some other garbage.

Also, may I add that no one is required to give any information out on the internet, your username doesn't even have to reflect you or anything about you. It is there for you to have an account with the software and log in + so there is a name per post. I think people can take the username a bit too far and see it as required identity, hell I even got told off on a forum for having a different username to the one they saw on a forum I was active on.

I don't know, I might just be being my weird self at the moment.

^It is true that your username does not *have* to relate to you at all, however it is internet standards that it *does*. It is your tag, it's how friends and others can keep straight who everyone is through out the web. No different than your email address really.

I can make a username of 'hgehghejfhdfge' just as easy as any bot, and the bots I have seen all make 'real' usernames these days, as to make it harder to catch them.

They numbers after a username, to me, makes it seem that they are trying to copy someone else. I realize I am not the *only* 'Ghost' on the internet, but I am quite different from the other's i've met. I don't use 'Ghost97' as my username, I just use 'Ghost'.

Historic detail, I once went by 'GhostHacker97'.
