If you are on a forum and it seems like the administrator(s) and staff disappear, or never logon; what do you do?

Pretty much what Reverse Flash said. If the staff don't care, why should I?

I stop going. If there is spam then I especially don't want to be there even more if no one is there taking care of it.

I'd have to agree with the others. Unless there is an announcement that they are going away for a certain amount of time or if there are no other staff members to fill in wondering minds then I usually don't stick around. What usually happens when an Administrator stops posting or even logging on, the activity dies down. The exception is when there is a solid staff team behind the main admin.

I also agree with the others. Inactive staff really puts a bad taste in my mouth. I will usually follow their behavior and leave myself with time if it happens on a forum I belong to. It's a real shame when a staff team becomes inactive as whole. They're essential to the forums success and activity in most cases.

Keep the forum for hold until they return, maybe wait a bit longer say a couple of months before I isolate the website.

I would simply laugh as I logout for the final time. If admins cannot stay on the forum long enough to even make an attempt to login and post a thread or two, then they really do not care about the forum. And that in of itself will cause issues down the way. It's just bad news, and makes me wonder how on earth they got the job in the first place.

Usually it's the first thing I check when joining a forum, so luckily I tend not to get into this situation.

Depends I guess, if it was a board I been using for a while I would probably check back a few times to see if things change, we all know the offline world sometimes get in the way for our online activities for periods.

If the admin wouldn't return within a couple months though I'd probably abandon the forum eventually.

If the forum is one I recently signed up with, I'd probably abandon it quicker though since I'd not really have made a connection with the forum yet then and likely go searching for another forum if the subject is of interest.

It's understandable for some people to simply have too much on their plate at the moment, but it doesn't hurt to at least check back every week and make a couple of posts. You were promoted to staff for a reason, so show some responsibility.

I think the question ask's if you go on a forum with admin's that aren't active, not talking about yourself.

You can take the question in many perspective's as if you were the owner, or a user going onto a new forum. Obviously if you are user going to a forum and the staff team is totally inactive then you will leave.

If you own a forum and your staff team is inactive, get rid of them. It's dragging down your forum having people there doing completely nothing.

My post was relevant to the question. You're correct that there are multiple perspectives to take consideration of, but there are many reasons for a staff member not returning consistently. If it's just one or two people who need a break, then it's unreasonable to demote them or leave because of that. Everyone has priorities in life, and staff members dedicate their free time to maintain and supervise your community out of generosity. Staff members who constantly have to deal with rude members and spammers deserve to take some time off.

They have the right to take some time off, but admin's who are inactive for a long period of time, an unnecessary amount of time should be removed. I know people have other thing's to do and they volunteer to do this, but if they can't take the time to go out and tell you that they will be gone for a very long period of time, then I see no point in keeping them on the forum.

I don't mind my staff member's taking a few day's to cool off.

It should be looked at as a case-by-case thing. If they come up to you and tell you that they're going to be really busy for a few weeks, then give them that time off. It depends on the size of your community and how active that person is for there to be a noticeable difference.

Exactly. There is a difference between them randomly leaving for 3 week's with no return in sight, and them coming to me telling me that they need to take a leave. I would obviously look into the situation and try to contact them another way to see what is going on. Thing's happen sometime's that we cannot control.

I think everyone who read's this whole topic will know how to handle an inactive staff member now.

I pretty much agree, and it's really rude when people don't make any effort to try to get in touch with you.

Just a little effort to PM or set your status on your profile to away, and a possible date when you will be back. That's really all that matter's.
