Some people are annoyed by ads. In fact, on my forums, I don't even run any.

However, though, going without commercials can force you into finding other streams of income - and it might not be so easy.

Anyway, one reason ads are so annoying these days is because they are so big. Case in point, look at the following link: https://www.businessinsider.com/online-ads-get-even-more-annoying-2014-7

But, some are annoyed by smaller ads - and in fact, some people don't mind ads at all, assuming they are not incredibly irritating like pop-ups or pop-unders (the traditional style of cheap advertising, by the way) 😉

I agree that advertisements that automatically play or are in the face of the user and being annoying are a bit over the top. At that point the advertiser may get a click but both the person advertising and the advertiser will likely not see any further business from that person because of the obnoxious advertisement.

I am all for supporting sites and turning off Ad Blocker when they have a fairly small out of the way banner ad or even when the ads are above or below content but aren't giant. People that don't like ads at all, it's entirely understandable...now if there was only an Adblock for real life? 😛

To be honest, I think ads are dead (Remember, Print is Dead?) - or at least should be. In the eyes of people, they are just seen as something they don't want.

Of course, though, one way to get around ads is maybe have a marketplace where people pay to post ads, or perhaps they pay for an elevated listing. Anyway, though, as with ads, there must be high traffic for this to pay off, of course.

I think in the realm of forums and perhaps even blogs you could potentially have available Ad spaces in footers and perhaps some links...basically ads that are more subtle like text ads. Perhaps this wouldn't be much better option but they aren't usually obnoxious.

In regards to ads on forums, people could potentially also pay to have ads in Admin and or Moderator signatures (those that are willing). Again though, very subtle things nothing ridiculous.

Take your signature for example, a little banner like that that changes when the page refreshes wouldn't be horrible in my opinion.

Well, this forum is cool for that thing. But a lot of forums frown on it. It depends on the crowd.

Anyway, it does seem to bring in traffic I think. Not sure if the banner is too big and should be like yours.

ProBoards has had a reputation of annoying/distracting ads, but it's far worse for the likes of DeviantArt and Facebook (especially now, the folk there are doing their hardest to bypass adblockers yet the move was heavily criticised, and rightly so).

Yeah, but those places have to make money. It's not a free show folks! Give me a break. :bored:

OK, what Facebook should do is just encourage upgrades. They could use text links for that to get around ad-blockers. But I think ads, just pure ads (for subjects they have now), that are text links won't get much attention (the bigger, the better).

Pro-Boards? They should also encourage some sort of upgrade I think.

Facebook also needs to screen more of their Ads...I have seen Ads come across that have been complete scams to get your CC information.

Ads can be annoying, and at most times people use ad-blockers and so even if you do have ads still need allot of traffic to earn something. In many cases people don't earn much

Sure they do, but I think asking users for a donation would be a better approach.

Let me tell you that DA's are worse. You can actually get infected by them, drive-by downloads and everything! 😱

Your users won't donate, I noised that most don't even care about upgraded accounts. If you have nothing to offer regards an VIP account then why would they pay.

A high metric website (domain authority etc.) and better yet, one that ranks - would get you the rep needed to be a guru. OK, in that case, an upgrade to a members only area would sell like hot cakes!

Ads are annoying, however, as a website owner we cannot do without ads. Using network ads is the easiest way to monetize a site, earning is also better compared to other monetization methods because you can easily earn from impression or clicks. However, having a lot of ads o intrusive ads like pop up and pop under might harm your site.

Depends on the niche. I mean, I used to run employment sites and most people were checking out the site - to click ads. That was the point. That's why that niche was so cool!

You may be right about the dying of ads because the ad blocker is already starting to do that. I have turned on the ad blocker in my laptop and there is one site that wouldn't open but with a message that says it needs the ads which wouldn't show because my ad blocker is turned on. I am not annoyed with ads except the pop ups and the automatic opening of a new tab or window.

ad blocker will block ads, but nowadays sites can detect those that are using them and block them from entering the site

I've only downloaded AdBlocker for youtube. I don't mind it being disabled on some sites but if the ad's are too big or I keep getting pop-ups then it's the time to enable it.

I hate ads when it so big that it makes the page to take so long to load up

No matter how brilliant you think your Adblocker is, it's impossible to block first party ads, not that there are many of those.
Ads just largely go hand in hand with the web, the webmasters run the site, the advertisers finance them, and the user does whatever they want.

Would you rather pay a $5 tithe to every site you go to?
$1 is not practical because a good portion of that goes into transaction fees and what-not.

I'm not sure there is an alternative to the ad economy, not for the web at-least.
The EU's idea of an alternative is Article 11 aka "the link tax". If you link to a site, then they can charge you money for doing so, but that is so divorced from reality.
