Forums are a pretty specific type of website. For a forum to succeed, you have to convince people who use forums to use your site as well. It is very hard to convince a non-forumites to start using forums just because of your upstart site.

So, here is a problem I run in to, and I think a lot of us do to: Adsense doesn't let you advertise to just forum users. You can only advertise to keywords, and most people interested in my keyword aren't forum people.

Do you see what I mean? Do you agree? Can I use Adsense to pick up members who don't presently use forums? Or should I use the shotgun approach, and hope that some forum people will see my ad?

This is why I wouldn't really buy advertising through adsense. Buying it from a specific site/forum through a service like BSA or something similar would be better.

If you do use adsense advertising, I would suggest making the ad go to a blog page or homepage that isn't the forum so you can use that to drag people in and get them to convert to the forum later once they're hooked on your content.

I agree with Geoffrey that Buysellads might be a better option because you can buy advertisement on forums. However Adsense isn't a bad idea though because even if someone who clicks on your ad who is not a forum person, if they like your website, they will still join. People will always be willing to try new things.

I think BuysellAds and/or Stumbleupon would be your best options.

you can use other ppc networks which might deliver better results, plus will be a lot cheaper.
