Advantages of closing pinned topics

Are there any advantages to closing pinned or sticky topics? I can see the logic in closing a thread, such as for rules when you really don't want comments but still want to relay information to your forum members. Then again, closing a thread that is pinned doesn't allow for feedback from your forum users. One idea would be to close or lock the thread so no further replies could be added but then link to a thread where you would accept input on the subject matter of that specific post. For instance, you could say, 'leave a comment here' with a link to the comment thread. That would keep your pinned posts pristine and readable.
 
I generally have a section for feedback, support and or questions so if a sticky is closed, they can always use that board to post.
 
I'd use that for a rule thread. Because it's important, and no replies should be made. Same goes for other section guidelines too, but there should be a link or option to give feedback elsewhere, if necessary.

Pretty much this. If I'm posting rules, or posting information for a specific section, there is no reason for people to comment on that thread.
 
There aren't really any so called "advantages" to doing this really, closing a stickied topic really depends on how necessary it is; if it a topic that contains the rules you don't really want people just replying to the topics because it's not really necessary. But if it's something like what most forums have in their Welcome area such as "How did you find us?" you don't want to close that because you still want feedback and having it stickied allows people to find the topic easily. 🙂
 
The topics not open for answers anymore are the ones which get closed. Simple! Usually the pinned topics are information topics on which one doesn;t need answers.
 
To close a thread must means that a reply is not necessary. It can be intended so in the beginning (e.g. rules thread) or response is no longer relevant (e.g. support thread). Or just discussions which turn into spam/troll ground or something similar. With pinned topics, they are usually important threads containing rules or special information. I do think closing such threads will be better to make them clean from unnecessary replies. When questions arise, the easiest way to ask about it is to send a message to the thread starter. Or, as members above have said, to write it down at support/feedback section/page which is always available in every website.
 
I closed a pinned thread on my forum once. The thread was a basic explanation of what phpBB is and how it works for those who have never visited a forum before and may not know anything about the software we're using. I thought of leaving it open for replies/comments, but ended up locking it when we got one really rude comment in particular. The member in question said something like "What's this for? A lot of people know what phpBB is and how it functions". Generally, yes, most people do know about phpBB and how it works, but you'd be amazed, though, because some people may not be familiar with any forum software at all, so a post describing what the software is about, what features it has, etc, can prove very beneficial for those who have never posted on forums before. I also posted that topic because I have a Facebook page for the forum and I'm advertising for my real life friends as well, so yeah.

I agree, if it's about posting rules, or information, or a Q/A it should be locked, if it's a feedback thread, or some news about the forum, i'd keep it open.
