How do you feel about advertising forums that make you link back to them by placing an image or url on your own site? I really don't like the idea personally for a couple reasons.

1. While linking back is okay as it's a way to thank that forum for allowing you to advertise at all, I've never really felt comfortable doing it. I've always felt that stuff like this should just be kept for affiliation exchanges only, and it doesn't look right as far as linking back when, say, you have a general chat forum and the other guy has an advertisement forum.

2. I don't like linking back to begin with, as I've heard of administrators constantly checking to make sure that you still have their banner, link, whatever on your page. Also, should the advertisement site close unexpectedly, unless the pair of you can come up with another deal or something, you're probably screwed as nobody wants to click a link on a dead or inactive forum.

What are your views on linking back on advertisement sites? Should they only just be kept from one advertisement forum to another (e.g. via an affiliate exchange) or is this a good idea no matter what? I also know that this is kind of a case-by-case basis as well, so no one's opinion is right or wrong.

That's rubbish. I would never advertise on such a forum unless it was getting massive traffic and had a huge audience related to my site's niche.

I've been on a few forums that do this and I really don't like it, to be honest. Especially since you never know how long that advertisement forum will llast. Thankfully, this is usually optional, but I still don't like it.
