I consider an ad to be like an Adsense or Adbrite banner.

But, I consider a sponsor a company like Microsoft, Nokia, Wal-mart or Sony who pays you a lot of money to promote their products on your forum, or plan to advertised on your forum for a long time. Also, you usually have to maintain a more positive relationship with your sponsor since they are interested in sponsoring your site then someone who just advertise on your site via Adsense CPC ads where you have no relationship with in most cases.

Sponsor means helping to pay your funds. Anyone who buys an ad is basically a sponsor, but you could have real sponsors who actually pay you for whatever funds you need.

In a way, Sponsors can be considered Angel Investors, Venture Capitalists, bankers, Investors, or some one with a lot of money who decides to be a partner in your site like how companies and investors gave money to Facebook, Groupon, Tumblr, or other start up websites in hopes of having a small share of the profits if the site becomes popular.

But, getting lots of funds for helping run a website is difficult for most sites without giving up part of the ownership, control, and future earnings of a site.
