I think advertising to get users for your website/forum is bad idea. Most of the time the people aren't interested in your site, it costs alot of money and most of the advertising networks are saturated with too many advertisers.

I agree that paying to advertising your forum is not the best route to take. You end up wasting money when you could be utilizing other free opportunities. Many sites actually allow people to advertise for free in a guest-friendly section of their board with the agreement that you allow them to advertise back in a guest-friendly section of your board. Overall, advertising and resource sites are your best bet.

To be fair, I have never paid to advertise anywhere, so I don't know exactly how beneficial it is or isn't. But I am also perfectly content saving my money and using the resources I have.

What kind of forums do you advertise on for free?

I use paid advertising on one forum and one classified.

I found them on Google using my keyword search so I felt it was worth it.

Most RPG forums and resource sites allow you to advertise for free in the space specially designed. There is also Tumblr, twitter, Facebook pages...

I agree with Uahitne. I have never paid for advertising.

I think that you are a bit wrong here, advertising is actually meant to show people your site, otherwise people would never come to know of something that exists. Though the CTR is low but only people interested in the niche click the ad, so the chance of them hanging on your site is more.

Advertising is good, but paying for advertising is not. There are lots of free directories/ resource sites where if you have your site's button in your signature, it is free promotion for it. There are topsites, plugboards, twitter, tumblr, facebook page, DeviantArt pages and groups - all for free.

For those who are more IT savvy than I am, there are also livejournal/ insanejournal, myspace and other free advertising sources.

Do you have any specific RPG forums where you advertise? And, do they only allow advertising for gamer related forums and blogs?

Of course only RPG forums are allowed to advertise on the resource sites. I have a full list if you are interested. And there are also the RPG sites like mine, where I advertise on their forum (in the Advertising subforum, of course) they are linking back to my advertising subforum, advertising theirs in exchange. There are tumblr resource sites too, twitter pimps (ie helpers), etc.

There are lots of forums where you can promote for free, This very forum is one of them. What kind of forum it is doesn't really matter that much. What matters is that the forum has staying power, and will be around for a while.

It seems that more and more forum owners realize that being too strict about users trying to advertise their sites costs them subscribers. There has to be some mutual benefit for subscribers to continue participating in discussions. So be generous with your users and allow signatures with dofollow links, set up a "showcase" forum for promotion, etc., or the people will go elsewhere.
