Let's say you have a niche forum (maybe for karate or stay at home moms or even business related). How would you go about advertising a niche forum offline to get those interested in that niche to get online to join the forum.
Stickers work wonders, make it a fun flashy one and people will visit the site. I have used them for a certain type of site and they worked AWESOME! I just stuck them everywhere around town and then went to some well known barber shops and placed a stack there with permission. You could do the same at karate places or wherever.
Just get out there in the real world with flyers and a ton of business cards.
Just imagine your the mail man delivering your users to your site.
To receive such visitors you'll have to work hard and get your name or ad into a local paper if that helps.
I was actually considering doing this for a truck forum I had in mind. I've got a jacked up truck, so I was going to try and build a forum by promoting on the actual truck and driving around like I normally do on a daily basis.
A online MMO game that I play, there was a couple of people who made custom stickers and such to advertise it locally, and that drew a few hundred people to sign up over the course of the life of the stickers.
Business cards I think are the best way to go when advertising your site offline. They fit easily in your pocket so you could take them to work or school. Flyers are great as well, but I think business cards are more effective. 🙂
I have a writing website, and I have been thinking of a lot of different ways to advertise outside of the internet. I will start going to a university in two years, so when that time comes, if I want to, I can print out short-stories and just hand 'em out around town. I am stuck with community college for the first two years, but they have a newspaper that let's me pay for advertising. I am not saying that it will be too successful, but that's some of the things that I do.
Basically, I just try to use some of the things available in my town. It's not just about who sees it, it's also about who they tell about it, and who their friends tell.
Stickers can land you in a bit of trouble. It's considered littering and sometimes defacing of public property. If you're very judicious about it & strategic (do it right & not in too many places or on street signs) you may get away with it.
