Hi folks, recently i got a .com domain for my music forum called RockTalk. Originally i just wanted to concentrate on rock but the thing is not everyone likes rock. I have added sections for pop, hip hop, dubstep and things but now i feel the title RockTalk may be little misleading. Do you guys think i should change the name of my forum? This would mean getting a new domain and things. Another option would be to start a new forum on the side and see how things go with that first before make any decisions on RockTalk. What do you think i should do guys?

All advice is greatly appreciated, thanks 🙂

Maybe you should change the name of the forum because people seeing "Rock Talk" think the forum is only dedicated to Rock. I would think so too if you didn't tell me it's not only rock.

It depends, actually.

Are you sure you want to expand your forum to a general music forum? Since there is a lot out there and it would be quite the battle. If you want to stick too rock, it's true that it's very specific and some might not like it, but you can also make yourself unique and explore more things from rock genre. I might be wrong but I think general music forums are more famous than specific genre music forums.

I think that's what you should consider first.

In a completely different point of view, I would agree with Gamrpro to change the name, easiest method to do. Though you would have to build SEO or something from ground again. XD

Yes, i know what you mean. Starting a general music forum would be a real challenge. Sites like last fm sort of dominate that market. i was thinking of starting a new music community with Ning. That might give me a better chance, what do you think?

If you want to focus on other things than rock, it's fine, as long as Rock is the main subject, make the others off-topic talk.

Yeah, as long as rock remains the main focus, then the name is fine. Though if you're planning on focusing on music in general, perhaps changing the name is your best option.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure what you mean with Ning?

If it is a unique tool which would be able to bring something different to your site, I suppose you can give it a try. Building a new music community would require you to have large coverage, especially with news and features and events, I guess. Means lots of work but also more area to explore. ^^

Ning is an amazing tool for work projects and social communities. I don't think it would work for a music forum though as it is not media orientated enough.
