How many warnings do you give a member who repeatedly misbehaves?

Maybe you keep an eye on the member and see if he/she settles down over a period of time before issuing a warning?

Perhaps misbehaving, such as cursing at members, saying your site sucks etc, get an instant ban?

For me, its 3 strikes and you're gone. Sometimes I let it go beyond 3. That's my tolerance system. If you test me too much, I will dole out bans.

Sometimes that patience wears thin and I cut it short. I gave a user 2 warnings, before banning the user. Because the user was obvious in being a jerk or trying to upset me or community. Hell, I banned a user from a thread because he was being belligerent towards others.

A user insulted me a few times, and I shut it down. But in general my tolerance is really good, its why people don't feel constrained or smothered.

Let your users have fun until they do stupid shit. At that point, ban 'em.

IPB has a really good system and is easy to use and trace/track 😉 On my end, I have always had an eight rule deal since the start. After eight points, you are out of the site, ban. At times if it's really bad, they get two to four or if not maybe all eight points at once. Depends on what they do.

Need to add more action but I can always enter my own when given warnings

I like the Three Strike rule as well. If it’s one that has been known to cause trouble, I don’t have as much tolerance for them. But I also try to give the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes someone just has a bad day.

My question is, does the seriousness of the offense also count for something or is it just a 3 strikes and you're out? (I'm just asking out of curiosity).

Like, is there anything that a person can do that you'll jump to a ban immediately to get them off your community?

*knocks on wood* thankfully I've never really had this issue with any of my members. I imagine I'd only point out an offense once and if they disregard and continue or make the same offense then they're out.

I'm a pretty easy going admin so it would take something bad to ruffle my feathers. If they get ugly with me when I point it out, then that might result in a ban...which may seem harsh at a glance but I'd like to think that we're grown people (mostly adults right?) we should be able to just have a conversation and acknowledge one another especially when we've offended someone.

I give 4 warnings:

#1 - Is a friendly warning reminding the member of the rules and asking them to please stop what they're doing. Most of the time it only takes this one because they truly didn't know they had broken any rules and have apologized and stopped.

#2 - More formal warning for members that didn't heed the #1 warning.

#3 - After trying the above warnings to no avail, they get a one week temp ban to rethink their attitude and to cool off. Sometimes people have issues in their life that's causing the bad behavior and return from the temp ban a totally different person.

#4 - Is when all others warning options did not work, they get permanently banned.

I'm a firm believer that the 3rd times a charm. You can only give someone so many warnings before it's time for a ban.

For me, I don't believe in the 3 strikes system. On my forum that if anyone tries to break any of the rules after the 1st warning given, is permanently banned. I banned and fired a member who was spewing racist things in some of the threads posted.

No mercy? Damn. What if it was unintentional?

Like for an example if flaming broke out during a heated debate in one of your threads?

That's justified. I'm glad you banned them. That kind of behavior is unacceptable.

Seems that owner makes a rule and sticks to that rule and so that right? I mean break a rule once and you are out 😵 I always think about what members want and not about what I want.

My site don't have any staff, sad to say this. That news article board I use to have for 2 years, I got rid of it.
