The Obama Administration’s manic spending spree to help “low-income” populations isn’t taking a break for the holidays, this month allocating an additional $845 million to a fraud-infested welfare program that’s already received billions from U.S. taxpayers this year.

Incredibly, this particular initiative—known as Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)—is rife with corruption that’s routinely exposed in congressional probes and the media. This hasn’t stopped the Obama Administration from pouring huge sums of money into it, however.

What do you think about this?

This article sounds like it was written by an angry republican.
Anyway, in the article it says the welfare system is 'fraud infested' but mentions that 'thousands of people' were the ones committing fraud. Seems like a small percentage when millions of people are on welfare in the US.
I'm all for helping families and 'vulnerable' people who really need it. Especially in these hard times. The govt. should increase their fraud prevention though.

Yeah, who does Obama think he is helping low income families? We should put them in gas chambers and then use them to fuel our tanks as we murder more low income families in the middle east. Hip Hip Hooray!

I don't understand why welfare spending is always on the table for cuts, but the $663 billion that goes to the Department of Defense is virtually off limits.

P.S. I'm going to move this to the Debate Corner.

Interesting perspectives but a few misconceptions. I respect the viewpoints but here are somethings to think about as the debate continues:

1. The defense budget is not off the table, $400B has been cut over 10 years, another $400B is on the table right now. 63K troops will be cut thus loosing jobs...

2. Not sure who is murdering innocent low income families in the Middle East. If referring to Drone attacks, every war from many nations has innocent casualties. Not making excuses but it happens. Fact is, more families are murderd by clan honor shame vendettas in the Middle East the all accidental deaths by military forces (exluding the few true murders that have taken place i.e. bad apple soldiers of which is not unique to just the U.S. military, all militaries have had such events) than has from any friendly incident on a per annum basis.

3. Let's not forget 3,000 people were murdered with nearly 50 being children in the World Trade Center Daycare. let's not forget the children on the planes as well.

War is indeed dirty, we can’t base our opinions/perspectives off a 30 sec video clip on the news. America has its own backyard challenges while at the same time it gives billions away to nations that turn right around and bite the hand that feeds it.

I am not saying the U.S. ideals are the standard, fact is they are not for everyone. The U.S. should not try and convert the Middle East to Western Ways of life. At the same time the Middle East has its fundamental drive to infiltrate societies across the globe too thus the two are no different when it come to End State agendas.

Welfare in America is at an all time high, it's a program that has been exploited by many who are simply too lazy. This is not directed at those who were working and truly are trying to find work and simply can't. Yes, there are jobs in regions but most Americans do not want to do them. I know if I lost my job I would pick vegetables and wash toilets, that is just who I am. No job is beneath me. This said, many rather get a free check and not do anything.

Topics like these are interesting, I watched it start about Welfare, then transition to implied U.S. bashing to anti military.... When making a case one has to stay on the topic at hand, you can cross reference other area, like the Dept of Def budget comment but expect a polite rebuttal in that statement is false.

A little more about soldiers, many go out and do what they do and also extend arms wide open to the youth of the Middle East, providing, cloths, books, shoes, medical care and more to those who do not have it and for the most part would never have it. Yes, it's unfortunate when innocent people get killed. War is dirty, it's not clean cut nor will it ever be. I am not taking a position on the war, only addressing what war is and has been.

I for one think the U.S. should stop funding the countries it does. Stop all payments and then re-asses who gets assistance based on effort by such nations to ensure that gift is doled out the right way. All too often our generosity comes back to bite us. The U.S. had even prior to the war given billions to Middle Eastern nations of which most of that money never reached the general populous.

I am for rebuilding our foundation, that is education. America's K-12 free Public
Schools are degrading and as it does so do our higher education systems i.e. Universities. Our nation has lost its identity, it is trying to please everyone vice taking a cold hard stance and being what it used to be. All nations are great in their own perspective but for a nation to truly be great it has to be good. America is still good to many but that too is beginning to tarnish.

No nation has the right answer, what is lacking is, worldwide common courtesy. All too often we are quick to attack a person vice an issue. We are simply becoming rude, ignorant and arrogant as humans.

You know a zoo in the U.S. had an exhibit some years ago. People walked up to a curtain, not saying anything until they got real close, you could only go in a few at a time. A sign read, behind this curtain is the most dangerous animal in the world. It is ferocious it kills indiscriminately, ravages its surrounds and hunts with a passion....

Get closer, closer, are you ready, the curtain is pulled back and!!!!!!!!! Ahhhhhhh! It's a mirror! Next to the mirror a list of everything mankind has destroyed. Pretty eye opening.

Great topic, appreciate you all reading my perspective. All I ask should you reply, is be courteous, do not attack me, address the issues and present a case as to why you have such a perspective. Example, have you fought in war, are you living in poverty, do you receive welfare, ever worked for the DOS, DOJ are you an executive, student...

I love being an Armchair Quarterback 🙂 Catch ya on the boards.

I apologize for my slightly erroneous statement above. It would appear that cuts are being made to the defense budget, but those cuts are not nearly enough in my opinion. I also think that it's ironic that people complain about welfare spending when the real waste is in the defense department. It doesn't make sense that conservatives hate cuts to defense spending when they like small government in my opinion.

Well said, I do agree there is waist in the Defense Department as there is waste in the social side of the house as well. The graph below says it all or does it? To the casual observer one would likely state, the culprit is defense! Is it?

Look again, Defense and Security in 2010 was 20% of the Federal Budget. 55% is social programs i.e. Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid and Safety Net Programs (Welfare...) of which is 14% of the 55% on social programs.

What bothers me is the 3% spent on education, keep in mind states are the primary funders of public education and yet we are failing. States raid the education funds to pay for other things, like congress does the Social Security Funds. We would not have a Social Security issue if those funds were left alone. Congress robbed Peter to pay Paul and for what did they pay for? Not Defense but other social programs.

2011 numbers are expected to be 10% to 15% higher than 2010. This said, turns out Defense is not where all the money goes even when you factor in supplimental spending, the money goes to social programs.

Should the DOD be cut? Sure, but so should the free handouts. When you look at past data, social programs have actually grown faster than DOD spending when stripping out the war. Even with the war social programs still outpace DOD spending.

When you look at the DOD you might think wow that is all weapons, not factual, it's largely medical. DOD Pensions are in there as well this is not the 7% you see for federal benefits, that is different. Keep in mind less than 25% of those in uniform ever retire from the service, so when hear about pay for military retirement... not so fast, it relatively a small portion of the budget for the DOD, what is large in that number is the medical cost. The 2nd largest cost is Pay for the soldier currently serving the third is weapons, training etc.

Not defending DOD alone, just want to give everyone a clear understanding that it's not as easy as cut the DOD. When you look at the aggregate numbers it's more, cut the free handouts or is it? It's really both.

I'll use the Wall Street demonstrators as an example. A large percentage of them are out of work and drawing checks from the government. Ever really watch the videos and listen to the speeches. You start to ask yourself, if a person can go camping in a park for 3 months why can't they write résumé or work at McDonalds, clean toilets..? Because, they like the free ride. Not all but most of these demonstrators have it wrong.

Good stuff 🙂
