I run a call of duty forum with DurfSack and in the beginning we were using phpbb. Then we kickstarted the forum with a vb conversion and then posts and members started to flow in. Then after getting 200 posts in a week, the forum just died. My admin and I have constantly been adding stuff to please the members but its pretty much dead. Any idea on how to jumpstart it again? We are thinking about a contest. The forum is http://callofdutyforum.info/forum.php
When I open the forum up, I see a small banner, nag bar, massive advertisement and a shoutbox. I don't even see the forum yet and on my fairly average 15.6" laptop, so you may need to address that.
You really face one issue; people are going to naturally go to the larger gaming forums, and not a newly created forum. Where have you advertised (be specific, rather than just "forums", "blogs" etc.)? Offer some application like Steam or for an iPod; the forum needs to compliment with something else which is unlike other sites. Maybe a database of applications or games, or maps etc.
