The Free Linux Mint operating system installed on a home built PC should be good enough for most daily tasks like web browsing, basic video editing, and multimedia. If you have a fast video card, and 4GB of RAM, or more, you can play a lot of games from Steam for Linux.
Now that Valve's Steam has Steam for Linux, you can use Linux Mint to play PC games without the need for WineHQ, and Emulators.
You can also buy affordable PCs which come pre-installed with Linux Mint.

I use Linux Mint on a computer with only 1GB of RAM, and an older dual core CPU, and it ran pretty smooth for my needs which are foruming, blogging, web mastering, and watching videos.
