What do you think about Admin approval for members’ registrations? My forum is on Proboards & we have the option where we can Restrict Registration so Admin can approve or deny an application. We also have the option of allowing a message to be sent. I turn mine on & off depending on what’s going on. If I have been hit with spam, it’s on.

I have heard of members complaining about having to wait for their account to be approved. Especially for those forums who are not moderated well & your wait time is a good month. I’m on often so I am able to check accounts on a daily basis.

I'm not really a fan of admin approval myself. I prefer to join and approve my account via email so I can start discussions with other members right away. I guess I'm just impatient. xD Though it's also off putting when there's no staff around to approve your account, so your account just sits in limbo for a while.

I only use admin approval when a troublesome member/spammer is constantly bypassing bans to be a pain in the arse. Otherwise I never use it.

I've put forums on Admin approval when I've had a situation arise where someone has been banned and is trying to get in to blast us with profanity/flaming/etc... But I prefer for new registrants to just get an email and leave me out of it.

No. I think that's deterring for new members to have to wait for someone to come along and okay their membership. I won't even stick around if every time I posted, it needed a staff member to approve it.

I hate it, it wastes my time as an admin and as a user. It can sometimes be necessary but I never like to use it if I can avoid doing so.

I agree with the above, i prefer to moderate if a user does somthing against the sites terms, if you limit a member from the get go from when they first register etc, they may never return.

when users self confirm email without admin input does save an admins time and energy. not all user are bad there is only a handful that may cause problems which with the tools on most forum software can handle this quickly, even with a set of automatic rules and warning system some forum software has

Admin approval can be a pain in the butt when it comes to joining a website as a member or a visitor. I want to join as fast as easiest way, and not have to wait for hours or days to get my account approved. I have been and seen so many new websites that only have admin approved and I do not get the way a month-old website needs to do it.

Plus as a staff or admin/owner, you do not want to be wasted time checking out and approving each new member, that's far more work and stress on yourself. End of the day, you have other methods in your hands, Your forum has a good system to detect and kill those bots 😛 - That's why I like IPB, they will detect and ban those fake and bots account right away if they see the email or an IP address listed on the black end.

Plus its old ways aren't it 😛

How can you decide whether the new member will be valuable for your community or not before he is even active on your forum? Therefore, I allow auto-approval for accounts. However, I normally put 10-120 posts in moderation before they can appear publicly. If the posts are good, I set them for auto approval.

I don't know if Proboards has that option for posts in moderation. It seems like a good idea.

Admin approval are really meant for website that are adults content really with age restrictions in plus, if you think about it

Admin approval is not something I would say I am a huge fan of, to be honest, and will only use admin approval if I have a reason to such as if we have a huge influx of spam accounts coming in and we need to stop it. I tend to use email approval where the user has to click a link in an email for them to be able to verify their account and I find that easier.

I don't do this for my forum myself. I have joined some that actually have before and it can take a day or two to be approved.

I am not a fan of them and I would completely agree that they discourage new members. It is a simple "I can use this forum now" vs "I can use this other forum eventually" and most people are going to stick with the one they can use now.

Granted, I would not be deterred as much if I was greeted by a message saying "admin approval temporarily is active due to XYZ" upon registering, but it is still a hurdle.

It's something I really like to avoid both as a forum owner and as a forum member but I do own sites where account approval is permanently switched on.

The reason is primarily because the forums are run as a support service on behalf of a service provider or because membership is by invitation only.

As an example one of my forums allows members to upload high quality images of rare and valuable musical instruments. The forum's main purpose is to help authenticate, value and catalogue these instruments for insurance purposes and to aid future identification if they were subject to theft.

If I have to wait to be able to post on a forum I will generally forget about the forum or not want to bother with it.

I cannot seem to find any reason to manually approve registrations unless you are the victim of a targeted hacking attempt. Of course you should set some procedures and rules in place to automatically hold registrations with the use of StopForumSpam API or other database API's with known spammers. Not all spammers are real people or targeted attacks, some will automatically crawl forums and websites in an attempt to get backlinks.

I would only use admin approval if we had a member continuously registering with proxies to deter bans and cause trouble.
