It's rare for moderators to stay on a site for a long time and for some sites, it's like a revolving door. Approximately how many moderators have you had on your site?

On my sites it's me and another superadmin, I don't have busy sites so I don't really need much for staff, when I had a gaming site years back we had 6 mods that stayed with me from 2003 up until I closed the site in 2011.

Christianity Haven has been around for 7 1/2 years and we've gone through more mods than I expected. Mostly they get fed up with ME because I won't add on more rules. The mods I've hired were friends from another Christian forum where there were too many rules and it was like a police state. I like a more relaxed forum and am not out to get my members every time their toe goes over the line.

I have been the only admin on my forum since we opened in September. I added a Moderator to it since the end of November. Besides that we don't really have anyone else moderating the team. We're not that huge yet, so for now that is sufficient.

It's just me running the place at the moment, I had a history with people being mods. I had them come and go to the point that I just do it myself as I'm sick and tired of having mods that end up not really helping and it's been the opposite.

I only had one person that was very helpful and made a big difference with Ash 🙂 as he was in the admin role, then he had to step down since he had university to go to which he's working his nuts off 🙂

End of the day they are volunteers but boy, worse off being in and out 😛 I had one guy who started with being back in the early days and has not logged into the site for two years and he never did anything anyway. I ended up removing him. I just can not find a great person who is sooo willing to be a mod, always ended up leaving soon after

When I owned my general chat forum I had 3 moderators and myself and they were all pretty solid in staying on for the duration of my forum being online. It was when I had to close my forum that they ended up stepping down as they were no longer needed. I think if I remember rightly there was only one time that I had a moderator that stepped down and that was because things got a little too hectic for them away from forums and the internet and they made the decision to step away.

My forum is over 2 1/2 years old & I've been the only Staff. I've had some help me out at the beginning but otherwise I've moderated my own forum. If I did get other admins or mods, I'd want to be sure they were in it for the long haul.

I've found bringing in new blood on staff for moderation, or an admin level can boost your site activity as long as you have trust; doing it alone is very tough nowadays; but if you can keep your staff engaged, your chances for further growth are good, as I said above my sites are a hobby, so I don't push for a ton of traffic. However, I have another admin who can step in and do what's needed on all of them.

On my forum it's me and one mod, got one other admin, but he's on hiatus, but we really don't need anyone more than me, honestly. Small site.

When I was running the community side of GameWinners we had upwards of 40 mods covering everything, it was necessary in its' heyday, but overkill by the time the site started to wind down. It was a little bit of a police state in the busiest days, we had Mods to patrol every forum, a Veteran Mod Group to run their core teams, a Super Mod group to propose policy changes, handle name changes and keep tabs on moderator votes and experimental forum rotations, and then the Admins to handle the upkeep, maintenance and implementation of the policies. It was very strict, but it worked for the time. Glad that's in the past, lol.

So far in recent forum management times, none.

That's because I haven't sought one out. I don't plan to add one until the forum becomes too overwhelming for me to handle. Right now, it isn't anywhere near that.

I've been very lucky, most of my moderators have been with me for 15-20 years. In fact the grim reaper is probably the primary reason I've lost staff.

Many years ago someone said to me 'power is easy to give but the very devil to take away'. That was good advice and I always keep it in mind when appointing staff.

Nowadays I've not lost none. It's only myself and another mod currently.

Way back I had maybe 1-2 at most. I think both stepped down due to IRL reasons, so let them go. They got the VIP/Elite member status, but still remained semi-active. It's like a revolving door as mentioned in the OP.

With that said I'll likely not be hiring many moderators on my forum since it isn't super active. If it did become bigger and overwhelming for myself and the other mod I may add one more.
