Hi all,

I'm interested in whether there is anyone out there that is developing apps for feature phones?

I know there aren't many out there in the developed world, but they are still a large (and growing) part of the market in developing countries.

So I was wondering whether, along with different technical specs, whether feature phone apps are being targeted specifically at the needs of developing countries.

Stephen.

I'm from a developing country (India), and after Android phones came into the show there is hardly any feature phones selling as we could get an android mobile as low as $50.
Feature phones are things of past here as i see it. There is not much advantage in developing apps for them, where we could develop a smartphone app with much ease.

Hi Stephen,

If you're really after some apps for feature phones, you would need to make sure that they are Java-based (.JAR). You can transfer them like any other device; USB or Bluetooth, seeing as they have microSD card slots.

However, without a dedicated 'app store,' comes a potential security issue. Rather than download straight to your phone, I would get them using your computer, and run any JAR files through at least one well known malware-prevention program. If you're given the all-clear, go ahead and transfer.

Unfortunately, as Kavin reported above, smartphones are becoming cheaper and cheaper each year, causing feature phone sales to fall, so you might be hard-pressed to find any decent and worthy Java applications out there.
