Are micro-niche/category sites still as profitable?

I used to hear a lot of bloggers talk about how it is easier to make micro niche websites like "banks with high interest accounts" profitable then general sites on generic topics like banks, but I don't really hear about a lot of people talking about Micro-niche sites as much as in the past.

A micro niche category is a very specific category for a website instead of general category.

"pre-paid credit cards for teenagers" can be considered micro-niche rather then just making a general website about "credit cards".

But, most of the people who made micro-niche sites seem to use article marketing which is not as powerful as before since search engines no longer rank article directories' backlinks as high as before since the Google Panda update was released in 2011.

I believe most of the micro niche users used long tailed keywords like "how to fix a broken wooden door knob" to generate traffic from search. But, long tail keywords also seem pretty hard to rank high for since a lot of the long tail keywords are ranking higher on authority websites like lowes.com, homedepot.com, walmart, amazon, etc when I do searches.

Now it seems more people are moving toward making bigger "Authority" branded websites on more general topics like "Playstation 3 games" then micro-niche category sites like "Fantasy Japanese Role playing games for the Playstation 3".

The problem is that Google has become wise to such sites, and in particular copied/duplicate content.

Making a niche site is fine as long as the content is original, but that's hard and takes time!

Most of these sites are just spam IMO, with copied content from Wikipedia.

Micro-Niche sites, such as pokemon, nintendo, xbox, certain anime, etc. If you pick a good name, such as UndellaBay.com, Pikachu.com, etc, you'll get a shit load of traffic, boosting your PR, and easily making your site valuable.

I agree making shows about anime, niche video game categories like Pokemon, Final Fantasy, can get a lot more traffic then hugely popular topics like "Make money online" which already has too many websites on the same topic which pretty much talk about the same thing.

I think putting all of those micro niche blah blah websites into one category and attempting to classify them as profitable is irresponsible.

One of them could be the best thing in the world or maybe even a good amount of them, but there's also a good amount of them that fail. I think it really depends on who is running them.

I agree it mainly depends on who is running them, and how much skill and motivation they have at adding new content about their micro-niche category, and promoting it in an effective manner.

But, I think making a Micro-niche site like "Saving Money for Teens" is easier to get high search results and shares on social networks then huge categories like social networks, search engines, and news websites which are overly crowded with a lot of well known websites like Facebook, Google, and Yahoo, and has a lot more competition in search results, and social media sharing.
