My security questions for my forum: http://thehorrorforums.com are as follows:
What is the genre of this forum?
What is the name of this forum?
Who is the owner of this forum?

In my opinion they are pretty basic and easy to answer questions when joining the site. However, after checking stats it seems that 300+ registrations for EACH are failing to fill in the correct answer. I am not sure whether this suggests that I need to change this to something more generic and easy, or if there are just a lot of spam bots trying to get through.

What do you think I should do?

I would recommend including the answer in the question, or maybe hinting at it.

What is the genre of this forum?
This may not be too clear. I would guess Horror, but you could also mean a number of things by genre. Entertainment, for instance. I don't know. 😛

What is the name of this forum?
People might try a number of things for this. Horror Forums, HorrorForums, The Horror Forums, TheHorrorForums.com. Even if the question is set up to accept all of those answers, the user may not except it to be.

Who is the owner of this forum?
Someone who finds your forum off of google may not know this one, and there are also multiple ways to enter that. THF_Martin, Martin, etc.

I'd recommend changing it to something like:

Who is the owner of this forum? (Hint: It's Martin).
What is this forum about? (Hint: It starts with an H)

You bring up some very good points Cosmic.

Do you think these are better?
What is the genre of this forum? (Hint: Its horror)
What is the name of this forum? (Hint: The H___ Forums)

You could even have easier questions maybe like...

What is rorroh spelled backwards?
What is the 5th letter in the word Horror?

Nice, I will add them just for more variety.

I think your questions are fine. Indeed, I'd say don't put the answer in the question, as that might make it too easy for bots to guess.

Spambots aren't very good at guessing. They typically can't read and process questions like a human can. So even if the answer is right there, most spambots will never be able to bypass because they aren't actually reading. What they typically do is compile a list of really common questions like what the defaults would be and have an answer to them. (So like if a question matches one in their ordered pairs it just drops the corresponding other part into the text section.) So if you leave your questions set to default, spambots will get in. But changing them to something even glaringly obvious will mean they can't get through.
This means you can give the answer right in the question and don't really have much to worry about.

These questions are probably the most effective. Giving the answer into a post might be a tad too easy, personally I find the harder questions that need to be concentrated on but don't require rocket science the best ones. They are security "questions" not "Questions and answers." That's just me though.
