I've noticed many businesses are not accepting personal checks and at my place of work, we get a lot of people writing hot checks that bounce. Is it safe to say that checks are unreliable? I mean, a debit at least will say no to the person trying to spend money they don't have, and credit cards will go. But checks? Well, if you don't take ID than you're pretty much eating a written check that had no money on the account.
With improved technology, businesses now require confirmation that payment has been received prior to providing customers with the product. Checks can be forged and also bounce. With debit and credit cards, and even cash, they can confirm that they received payment before letting the customer leave the building with the product.
I'm not aware of anywhere in the UK aside from charity shops (and banks of course) that still accept cheques as a valid payment method. I know some businesses let you send cheques through the mail to make payments etc etc but shops and physical stores? That's a no as far as I'm aware.
