Two articles I have read recently make me wonder. In the first, a teacher has banned student's from saying "Bless You" if someone sneezes. He even go's as far as to reduce the student's grade who dares defy him. His reasoning: the term "Bless You" is outdated and disrupt's the class. Well a big Sieg Heil goes out to Steve Cuckovich, the grand Fuhrer of the speech police.

In the second, a school in the U.K. has banned school children from raising their hand. School children have been banned from putting their hands up in class - and told to do a Fonz-style thumbs up instead. Head teacher Cheryle Adams explained that the thumbs up gesture was a more positive hand signal and had a "calming" effect on the eight and nine year old children in the class.

Just let me know, please, have I lost my mind?

Alas, I guess idiots can exist in any workplace, including education, ironically.

We don't need no education. We don't need no thought control. Teacher! Leave us kids alone!

Nah but eh same with anything. Funny fact about my school; one of our teachers is a felon, he was arrested in 2008 for doctor shopping / dealing adderall. Middle school teacher in same town went to jail for child abuse a few years back. Oh and one of the English teachers has two lovely DUI photos on the police online database 😛.

I love the Floyd reference "Gimgak" because I think some of these teacher's have been hit in the head by a falling "brick".

I know a teacher at a school in my county that was arrested for DUI like the weekend after the first week of school. It was in the newspaper, and a lot of us had laughs over it. She didn't lose her job or anything though, she didn't even get in trouble. It just makes me wonder: what do our teachers do in their free time? 😛

I really do believe our schools are run by lunatics these days though, especially my school.

I knew a lot of the teachers in my old school enjoyed smoking some weed every once in a while, it was decriminilized and they were mostly really young so it didn't really matter.

What I'm saying is most teachers are still normal humans, they have normal lives too and still screw up so it's not fair to hold them to high standards outside of school, unless they do something like harm minors or others.

Come on, Gimgak. We can't have teachers going around setting bad examples for students by doing things like driving six miles per hour over the limit.

True, considering it's only socially acceptable to go 5 miles over the limit.

I'm still adjusting to what's right down here in Florida. The drivers here suck so it might as well be 😛

That is true, I remember me and my friend sitting at a four way and not one,but three cars went on the sidewalk drove by us and made a illegal turn on red.. yet my parents worry about me driving after I went through a safe drivers course...

Okay back on topic ... Yes schools are being run by lunes, but so is the government  .

The government is crazy. Get the unions out of school and the schools will be 9001x better in ~5 (Or less) years.

ALSO the system is built to indoctrinate people into leftism. This must also be ended.

Most if not all of the countries that are ahead of the U.S. in education have powerful teacher unions.

Also, my government teachers always went on and on about why communism and socialism don't work. I'm not sure how you can think that they indoctrinate people into leftism.

>Implying that they should make in excess of $200K, have firing immunity, union rights, etc.
>Saying that leftism is opposed in class.

Your books are valued based on left-wing agenda, non-offensiveness, and pictures. These raise value. This messes up the book system.

Next.

Teacher unions are a restriction and heavy cost burden. See charter schools and private schools. I don't know if you know this, but just so you know, American unions are more powerful than European unions in all sectors, from manufacturing to teaching to firefighting. Another thing is affirmative action. We lower our standards to help blacks. Sort of an insult to the blacks, to be honest. They're intelligent, although, in many cases, poor education in predominantly black communities leads to them not succeeding as well. But affirmative action just makes things worse. It entitles them to benefits for race. That is racism in and of itself. But now I'm getting into a whole new thing, so I'll move on.

There's way too much bureaucracy around teachers. Discipline is highly frowned upon.

On your teacher...that's actually pretty unusual nationally. Did you have to watch the Story of Stuff like most people have to? Sometimes, I wonder if some people here would agree with Annie Leonard.

Tenure has to go, too. Tenure has resulted in teachers actively attacking students in class while making over $230K/year and then the government having to pay them afterwards, even after years have passed in legal battles and millions have been spent on said legal battles. I saw that one on Stossel. The teacher was NYC though.
