I was just wondering if SEO contests are still a thing these days. I was going through my blog that I participated with and remembered PromoJunkie used to have a bunch back in the day. Haven't seen one in a while though. But maybe I'm not looking good enough...

I think SEO contests would be like "hacking into NASA or the CIA contests" now. It's just way too hard. It's not like back in 2011 or earlier. Anyhow, I guess it might be possible if you got a huge bankroll.

Well that's disappointing. You're right though. So much has changed since 2007.

Well now I feel old. People would run contests to see who could rank first in Google for certain keywords. The prize money was usually in the thousands.

I've only been a webmaster since 2009 :O so I'm moderately young for it I guess lol.

They are. Looks like Wix recently had a 50k SEO contest.

If you're paying 50k for SEO you're an idiot.

OK, just joking there. If you're paying, you'd might have to dash out 10 or 20 thousand, so that gives you 30 or 40 thousand for winnings.

I bet you most major companies either do that, or they have employees do it for them, which probably equals to over 50k in salary.
There's a difference in salary and paying an independent contractor to do it. SEO can be learned and is more time consuming than difficult. 50k is a year's worth of salary but for some SEO, nah.

You can't get the connections (guest posting) for SEO for nothing. That's why it can never be free and be any good.

If these competitions are around even 2 times a year, having people on 50k salary to enter even two competitions would be beneficial if you win, or at least come in top x place. I'm just saying it might not be the dumbest thing to do. If they won 50k that pays for the year, every one after that they do is simply profit on the owners end.

That's the only way I would participate in SEO contests and I ranked pretty high. Never won but got close with second and third place.
