Welcome to the post-PC world

This year, over one billion internet-enabled devices will be sold globally with less than one third of those devices being laptop or desktop computers. While the absolute number of PCs sold continues to grow, PC sales as a percentage of overall internet-enabled device revenue is declining quite rapidly, justifying Mr. Cook’s belief that we have entered a post-PC world.

Do you think we are already in a Post PC Era?

I think the world is getting to the Post PC era, Because I think mobile sales of Smartphones, Tablets, and eReaders will continue to grow faster then PC since a lot of people and companies and education still use Windows XP on older computer hardware which they bought in the last 5 years or older, and don't replace PC till they break beyond repair or upgrade.

There might be more people who are willing to buy Tablets, and Smartphone then a new PC because they don't own a tablet, smartphone or other mobile computing device, but own a PC.

Plus, mobiles are not upgradeable, so if people want a faster iPhone or iPad, they need to buy a new one when a new one is release instead of adding more RAM, a faster CPU, or video card like a PC which let people use their PC longer.

Well I do think mobile computing is taking over that I am not doubting.

However I do not see regular PC's and laptops dying anytime soon either.

I say this because tablets and smartphones do not have near the amount of power of a Desktop or Laptop. So you are not going to be able to play something like crysis2 on a tablet.

Your not going to be able to have power house programs like adobe after effects open making a high def video while listening to music.

My point exactly. I don't even know if there is too much more to be said.

Frankly, you can't just make a movie and do all of the editing on your tablet. Even when we come (not if, when) to the age that Adobe After Effects could run on say my iPhone 15, the restrictions posed by screen and space limitations are endless. Anyone in there right mind would need a laptop/desktop to do that work.

That's until we get holograms figured out when someone can just use there phone to create a larger screen right then and there. However, in the point of the article, until we reach a stage where users are able to use mobile devices such as a smartphone to create larger images, I think the PCs will be here to last a while. Hell, even when that happens, we will still be PC.

This is like honestly saying that the invention of the CDs/DVDs pushed us into a Post TV era. Instead, they coexist. Mobile technology will probably always coexist with the PC.

I think for professionals and higher end users the PC will be used for editing video, music, and photos and high end gaming until technology advances where a quad-core CPU 13 inch tablet with a optional keyboard dock with 4GB RAM, 1 TB SSD drive, and high end video card becomes affordable at 500 dollars or less.

But, for the casual user like grand parents who want to keep in touch with their grand kids and kids who only use their computer mostly for e-mail, skype, forums, social networking, reading, and non-media creation tasks, a mobile computer might be good enough, and they use PC for the odd times when they need to create content like video, coding, photoshop, and more.

Windows 8 Tablets like ASUS Windows RT Tablet 600, powered by the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core mobile processor. with a Keyboard dock could replace the Netbook, and laptop for the average gamer who plays World of Warcraft, RTS, MMO and lower end games which don't need high performance hardware to play games.
