I seem to be able to see, assess and act in a difficult or dangerous situation long before the people around me even understand what's going on. I've been in situations where people have been badly hurt or died and I've felt the need to take charge while the first responders where quite frankly out of their depth.
I think in these kind of situations I become emotionally bankrupt which makes it easy to focus on what really matters.
I stay calm in a crisis for some reason. I tell people there's time later to have a breakdown!
My daughter got hit by a car and the cop, who was a friend of mine, said he couldn't believe how calm I was and he'd be in hysterics. I even drove her to the hospital because she didn't want to go by ambulance and I was fine.
When it's for loved ones, I can keep a level head. What helps me is focusing on their pain. A plus is when I have my dog with me. It just ups my mental & emotional capacity to handle things.
I tend to compartmentalize things. I'll put fear and the emotional stuff aside and focus on the situation at hand. I can deal with being sad or upset later after I've dealt with the situation.
I feel I would be useful in a crisis. I tend to be a calm, cool and collected person even when there is chaos going on. Those are the qualities you need to be able to handle a difficult situation.
