Today is a day of tragedy for Arizona and the United States.

Today, at around 12pm Arizona time, a gunman opened fire during a public meeting held by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords . The shooting left 6 dead, including a 9 year old girl and 13 wounded.

The authorities have not released the identities of all the victims, however it is now known and official that Federal District Judge John M. Roll is among the dead. It is also now official that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was the target of the shooter.

On my blog, linked below (signature), I have made a post about this tragedy, with links to newspapers and other information about this tragedy.

Please have the victims in your prayers!!!

Yeah I've been keeping an eye on this all day. I remember they said she was dead earlier on today but then they amended that. What's interesting is that this is really the second time someone has tried to kill a congressperson (first time was successful, look up Leo Ryan) in US history... it's just such a rare thing. I've seen my congressman before and walked right up and talked to him. I really hope that things don't change that much. The argument is that now it is pretty much exposed that congress people don't have any security unless they are in the leadership (leaders/whips/chairmen of important committees) and that they are open to be assassinated at any time, which is obviously not good. So now is it going to change, are we not going to be able to talk to our representatives anymore?

My guess is that security will be doubled if not tripled.
I think we still ought to be able to talk to our representatives, but those talk would be held under protection detail.

I think it'll more or less be up to the congressperson. I can see extra security being suggested but I don't think that everyone in congress is going to be under 24/7 security. I'm sure things will for the most part be the same.

Well there is no security in the first place 😛 Representatives/senators have no security. Only the leadership does.

Security doesn't matter. If someone really wants to do this, patience and planning will prevail.

It's amazing that she survived a bullet to the back of the head at close range. Gotta love our doctors! (Or that guy's crap aim.)

Wow, this is sad. May God be with all the people who are being affected by this somehow. Whether they are family of a victim, etc.

Yes it does matter, in every way. If Pelosi or Boehner were hosting an event like this, some guy running up with a handgun would have been shot down within a millisecond.

True, all the security in the world never stopped JFK getting killed did it?

I heard this coming through last night as it was happening, if there was another man helping out then there is no way the authorities can say it was a crazed killer. Apparently her office was targeted not so long back too?

I hope this doesn't change security for congresspeople. My former congressman had an office walking distance from my school, and if I knew he was there and had free time I could probably talk with him. All it takes is one lunatic to ruin it all.

Not like it is a laughing matter, but I found it funny all the confusion the media caused by wanting to be the first to report everything. Multiple news agencies reported she was alive, then dead, then alive but in critical care. Don't report something unless you have good proof.

MissTake, sorry about the link I had in my original post 🙂

Yea, her office was targeted before. But again, not much is known.

This morning for the first time, we hear about the 9 years old who was killed yesterday. She went to see the Rep because was wanting to learn more about the government because she wanted to become a politician.
The girl was born on 9/11 , was aware of the significance of 9/11 and was very patriotic, wearing the USA colors.
She was just elected student body president (if I got this right) and she is related to famous baseball player and coach Dallas Green. She was the only girl in her little league baseball team (2nd baseman) and to quote her mom, was very good.

She is the daughter of Dallas Green.

He didn't have all the security in the world. Back then, Presidents rode in convertible limos, and secret service didn't lock down buildings on the president's motorcade route.

If Pelosi was about to be shot, I don't think anyone would intervene.
Statements like this are part of the reason this even happened. I don't understand when it became appropriate to joke about someone being killed because you disagree with their political beliefs.

Yet the left wing joked about killing Bush for 4+ years... :/
I didn't say that was acceptable either. Its despicable no matter what side it comes from. This isn't an issue of the left or the right, this is an issue about America as a whole. About Americans. When inflammatory statements are made by those on the news (Whose job it is to report facts, not give opinion) and other leaders in the country we need to hold them accountable for their irresponsibility. When you're a public official you're taken more seriously than a guy on the street corner with a sign so when Sarah Palin (there are those on the left who have done things just as bad) says "Don't retreat, reload" and superimposes cross hairs over the congressional districts of those who she's opposed to on her PAC's website it shows a lack of responsibility and understanding of the power she has.

Think American's are bad? Take a look at Poland. There were people who celebrated the death of of the president and almost 100 other people in the plane crash in April.

Moral of the story: Everyone is a fuking scumbag, it's human nature.

A point blank shot has less chance of killing someone than a long shot 😉
