Ask me anything (zappaDPJ)

What's the worst experience you've had with a neighbor?
Living next door to a family of Jehovah's Witnesses and their constant stream of visitors, many of whom were seriously mentally ill. One of them attacked me with a pair of scissors. They eventually sold all their possessions and went to live on a mountain to await the end of days.

What advice would you give a long time forum owner who is about to migrate from vBulletin 4.2.3, lots of custom plugins, to Xenforo, in terms of style, customization, support and management selection? I stay very busy with my day job, which is industry related to my own business, so I just don't have the time or skills to properly manage the more intricate challenges that a dated vBulletin platform has presented. Hopefully, managing a Xenforo site and will not be so maddening.

I think it's imperative you explain to your members with emphasis on the positive why you need to change something some might see as a comfortable second home.

Ideally you'll want to run up a test board using a copy of your vBulletin database. If you document each stage of the process it'll help streamline things when you do it for real.

As far as the style is concerned you have three choices. If your current forum is professionally styled with a properly designed logo then you might want to consider trying to replicate that in terms of look and feel. That's often the best option as far as your members are concerned. Alternatively you could decide it's the right time for a rebrand and go for a whole new look. The third option would be to do nothing, use the default style plus your logo.

Plugins/add-ons/customization might present some issues. You may well find you cannot replicate some of the functionality you currently have but then again you might not need to. Xenforo is obviously more modern in terms of development compared to vB4. I would use your test site to determine what you might be missing and see what third party options are available to fill the gap.

If you have staff you might want to consider asking for their input but I would avoid asking the general membership for opinions because they will put forward too many diverse ideas.

I've upgraded a few forums from vB4.2.3 to earlier versions of Xenforo and found the process fairly painless. In a couple of cases it was a little time consuming mainly due to the size and complexity of permissions contain within those forums. Aside from that the importer did all the hardwork for me.

ever wanted to watch Toy story again
Not really. I did rather enjoy it the first time around, mainly due to the solid script and the animation which was obviously state of the art at the time. It suspect it might look a bit dated today.

If your life were a book, what would be the title of the current chapter?

Chapter 6: Technology and my leanings towards an Amish way of life.

I've just had a three day techno-nightmare which started with a PC that failed to boot. At one point I thought I'd lost 10 years worth of work. To cut a long story short, persistence paid off and I'm back up and running again but my love affair with technology has taken a serious hammering.

What is your ”don’t even get me started“ subject?
I have a long list... here's my top 3!

Top of my list is the UK's TV Licencing which criminalizes approximately a thousand people a week (mostly women) for watching 'live television' without a licence.

Second on my list is the UK's tax on higher education also known as the student loan. My daughter is a highly paid actuary with nine years in the job. The amount she owes on her student loan increases every year even though she's already repaid almost as much as she borrowed.

Third on the list would be the UK's health service which we are often told is the envy of the world. In reality it's demonstrably one of the worst health services in the world no matter what metric you choose to look at.

last sunrise you seen that was epic to watch
