Ask me anything (zappaDPJ)

What is the most unique genre of music you know?
Captain Beefheart pretty much sits in a genre all of his own. 'Trout Mask Replica', a double album released in 1969 which most people absolutely loathe on first hearing, is considered by many to be one of the greatest recordings of all time after repeating listening.

It doesn't fit any genre but usually gets categorized as 'experimental rock', 'avant-garde' or 'art rock'. I've lost track of how many times I've listened to the album and know and love every single note but award yourself 5 stars if you can tolerate just 5 minutes :joyful:

Beatboxing: Is it music? A performance art? A sporting-like competition? Is it a mixture of the things I listed and maybe other things and if so to what extent is it certain elements?

I'd say it's primarily music that needs to be performed in a live environment to be fully appreciated. That to some extent puts it one foot in the performance art category.

I wonder what Captain Beefheart would have made of it!

I just read Linkin Park is having trouble selling tickets to their shows. Do you think it's because the band isn't the same without Chester or is it some other reason?

In my view Chester Bennington was irreplaceable and a huge loss so I can understand the dwindling popularity. That said I think despite all the criticism Emily Armstrong is a pretty good fit for the band. The two songs I've heard from the new album suggests the band still has a future.

Some say The Traveling Wilburys were "perhaps the biggest supergroup of all time". Would you agree or disagree and why?

I agree. Although they were short lived due to Roy Orbision's untimely death, the stature of the group's members is unparalleled.

Having said that, musically my favourite supergroup by far is Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

What do you like best about a song, the lyrics of the song or the melody?

What fictional band (from movies or TV) would you love to see live and in person but will never be able to because they aren't real?

Oddly enough The Partridge Family because many of the songs they had written for them were really good and incredibly well executed due in part to David Cassidy's voice.

They also recorded a pretty good cover of a song original sung by Gene Pitney.

Where do you store guitar picks?
I've never use guitar picks a) because I can't keep hold of them and b) because I find them limiting.

When I started to play professionally I was often quizzed about it because nobody I can think of played like that unless they were playing folk music. It wasn't until people like Jeff Beck, Mark Knopfler and Lindsey Buckingham were seen playing electric guitars finger style that it because more mainstream.

My right hand finger positioning is similar to Knopfler's in that I anchor my hand on the guitar body using my fifth (pinky) finger. In fact the constant pressure from over 50 years of playing that way has cause it to deform a little!
