ASTON VILLA FC NEWS

Aston Villa v FH Hafnarfjordur (4-1 Agg) Live On Five 28/08/2008

Aston Villa left-back Nicky Shorey is out with a knee injury he sustained in the defeat by Stoke on Saturday. Villa lead 4-1 from the first leg and manager Martin O'Neill could use his side's commanding position to rotate his squad. Striker Marlon Harewood, defender Zat Knight and midfielder Craig Gardner could each start.

Villa (from): Friedel, Luke Young, Laursen, Davies, Reo-Coker, Barry, Petrov, Ashley Young, Carew, Agbonlahor, Taylor, Harewood, Knight, Salifou, Routledge, Gardner, Osbourne.

I didn't see this game but I saw that it was 1-1 and something like 5-2 on aggregate. Wonder how far Villa can get in Europe this year?

I think we have a great chance actually - we have the squad this season to advance

I though Everton could have won it last season, we had a quality starting 11 but as the competition goes on the team gets tired. It will be a very good experience for Villa and the Villa fans and I think they will go far but I don't see it being their year in the UEFA Cup.

Completely. We destroyed them and should have won by about 4 or 5. Our best performance for a long time.

We are so much better than that, was annoyed at the way we played on Sunday, tactics were very negative and that surprised me alot really. Was confident going into the game as we always get the upper hand ove Chelsea, and are very much their bogey side. Still all teams have off days, lets just hope thats the only one we have.

Wouldn't agree with that mate, most of our squad have played Uefa Cup football, and Champions League football at that with other clubs. Experience is there, as for the fans were all familar with Europe, we were a regular fixture almost every season in the 90's, granted we havn't played in it since 2001 but Villa Park is famous for it's European nights.

Yeah but what I was just saying, I thought Everton could have won it last year but we tired. Everton is also famous for European nights but that doesn't help you win it. We will see though.

Quite looking forward to this Saturday's tie against Pompy. I think the way Villa are playing at the moment we'll have a pretty good game on our hands.

If we can get our back 4 sorted and with James in goal it will take something special to score past us ~cool~

It will be a decent game indeed. Will be interesting to see how James copes with our pace and shooting from just about anywhere, the service from Ashley Young to John Carew is vital. Plus having Gabby Agbonlahor running in with Carew i think were create loads of chances. As long as our midfield can concentrate were win the game, IMO our midfield on paper is better than Pompeys.

Too bad I don't watch soccer if I did I would be interested in this. Too bad for the player with the knee injury

Aston Villa midfielder Ashley Young has won the Player-Of-The-Month award. Young picks up his award for scoring twice in September and setting up a brace also - following 3 wins on the bounce - Young joins an elite band of players, including Cristiano Ronaldo - Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard who have won the award more than once

Yesterdays game was very entertaining i thought and i enjoyed it - we had the better of the chances having 14 corners during the game but failed to take them - Pompey have a tight solid defence to play against and decent midfield - they couldn't deal with Young and Carew at times going forward resulting into some dirty tackles that saw 3 of their players booked and 1 sent off - a tail of both sides cancelling each other out in defence - was dissapointed with Pompey in the last 10-minutes by taking the ball into the corners wasting time - it was clear they were happy with the point as they wasn't creating nothing at all - dosn't say much for a team who want to go places - their support was shite as well i thought - good to see away fans chucked up in the corner out the way though

Aston Villas midfield is much better than pompeys. Pompeys midfield is very tall and strong but not as creative as Villas. I am not saying Pompeys midfield is not creative just not as creative as Villas. Portsmouth midfield is probably better defensively.

I'm happy with the point we picked up yesterday. I knew villa would be a tough game, and fair play to them both teams played well. Gutted about Defoe's miss in the first half, I think it would have been a completely different game had he put that in the net. ~neutral~

It was an entertaining game yes, 2 solid defences putting up a huge fight. We had the better chances in midfield with Petrov bossing the middle of the park. Was dissapointed with Pompey in the last 10 mins running the ball into the corners with every chance they got. More or less they come for a point instead of 3. Was dissapointe with Pompeys support as well, less than 1k turning up to support them, wernt very loud either. Defoe's miss from a yard out was a shocker lol.

Villa,I gotta admit....is playing...pretty good....
Still, Arsenal all the way!

Pompey's support is never to good anyway, that atmosphere at the Everton game yesterday was amazing and it changed the game.

Anyway, Villa looking really good now and are playing some excellent football. I think revamping you whole defence was a really good thing to do as they are playing really well. I watched Laursen the other day and he was a really good leader and even managed to get a goal.
