Attachments

Sure, but what's the point of uploading attachments anymore? It's much more convenient to insert the images and other files from a direct URL. They only serve to tease people into registering an account to see what's inside.

True. I don't usually upload images as attachments anymore. But for files like documents, pdfs, spreadsheets, etc on forums I use the attachment system. I find it easier as I don't use any file sharing services besides photo upload sites. Not sure what's out there though I've heard of MediaFire.

I allow this, but I'd much rather people post links to such attachments, like if they're posting about a current event, I'd rather the pic stay in the article rather than have a big huge pic on the board. Posting pics in general just makes things load slower sometimes it seems like.

I would allow attachments if I had a forum that had something to use it for. It would be heavily moderated because you have the people who upload viruses and inappropriate items.

Disabling attachments is something that I think many forums could get away with now. I've been pretty much trained (as a lot of people have) to be wary of these systems, because they will often have upload limits, both for your entire account and for specific files. Sometimes, and usually, it's just best to use something like imgur, as they have the server space to spare, and the forum does not.

They're enabled on my board right now but I've been contemplating disabling them. Eventually they're going to take up a lot of space on the server.

Yes, not on all boards thought. However there is an set size of 500mb for each account.

Fortunately, disabling attachments is never too late on my part. My most successful forum hasn't really had attachments being put to use since almost two years ago. I'll still keep them up, because having more options is always a good thing. I mostly use attachments to keep content accessible among the registered community.

I don't see a reason to upload an attachment anymore at all. Anyone who has very much technical skills at all will upload it to an upload site like Imgur or PostImage. Even if it's a file, Google Drive will still hold it way better than a forum upload system.

They are now disabled and nobody protested that decision. It seems like attachments aren't a big deal these days.
