What I'd like done is have the folder icons be replaced with a picture of Aang (faded for no new posts, and un-faded (regular) when there are new posts).

Oh sorry about that. I should've specified who Aang was. Aang is one of the characters in the TV show "Avatar - The Last Airbender". Here's a google image search for Aang:
