When I receive a commendation in a forum, for sure I would be euphoric even if it’s just words. But the appreciation of the admin will truly be appreciated. I am trying to relate this to the note I received the other day from a forum admin for my “good” posts. And I was really on cloud nine for receiving such a commendation. I am posting in forums to enjoy and a simple praise is already a big bonus. That said, I think it is an important element in forum to give out commendations or awards. As they say, those are just words, no expenses involved. What do you think?

I think that a combination of an award system (automatically get an award for 100 posts, being a member for so and so long etc) with such more personal notes as you mentioned is a good way to go. The awards give the members something to strive for, which increases the chance that they'll create more content. Still, awards are a bit too mechanical in themselves (as anyone can reach them), while staff giving members a pat on the back makes you feel appreciated.

Tell you something though. There's a user on our forum who doesn't make good threads, he copy/pastes shit off google most the time because he can't be arsed to write it himself. We try to tell him that he needs to slow down and post more engaging topics. I wouldn't be willing to give rewards to people who deliberately inflate their postcount like that.

Good users, ones who contribute decent posts that boost the community. Those are the ones that we reward in other ways. Usually those users eventually get asked to join our staff in some capacity. We don't take applications for staff, we don't give positions to people who are obviously vying for a mod position and are likely to go on a power trip. We choose people not on their postcount, but the quality of their posts, how they've made the community a great place to be and so on.

Sometimes they turn down the opportunity, but I think for them, it's nice to be asked in the first place. ^^

I totally agree with what you said here. For them good content writers posting important and SEO friendly content is always a bonus for any forums, and I have been offered a position before and turned it down due to not having enough time but it is always a good feeling.
