Backlinks are links from other sites that point to your site. They are helpful because; people may follow them and hence visit your site, plus they help your search engine ranking and Google Page Rank.

By getting people to link to your site. You could start by submitting your site to free directories and with blog comments. You are in fact already building backlinks, by including links to your sites, in your signature here on Forum Promotion.

Every post you make that gets indexed on google (for example), is a backlink because your sites link is in your signature and profile. Every affiliate scheme you have generates you a backlink.

Make sure you do it on relevant sites. If you have a gaming forum, say, links from book forums will have less importance than from other gaming forums.

Not really. Backlinks are links that trace back to your site. For my forum, I had links going back to here, a programming site, some gaming site, and my forum was a graphics forum.

I think you are referring to Page Ranks and relevance of the site's genre :shrug:
