you can add seo quake to firefox and check them

Be careful with backlinks and make sure they are unique. Have the exact same link and link text can harm your site's SERP Ranking.

Mostly would recommend to focus on content/forums that are within your niche. Having too many backlinks from random forums/websites can actually hurt your ranking if they are not well known, or if they have any duplicate content that may be on other websites in their same area.
