Have you ever banned a member for life, only to change your mind a few months or years later and decided to let them come back to the forum? What made you change your mind on the lifetime forum ban?
With all the spammers that come in with myBB, I've banned several e-mail address, ip address and usernames permanently. I have never had to ban an actual member who posts relevant things around the forum and I hope that I never have to.
I give people I don't like permanent bans.
I don't ever permanently ban IPs because they change.
I just perma-ban the emails, account, etc. and look out for them in the future.
If I've gotten to the point where I have to ban someone? I don't care about them or their feelings. They had opportunities to be good and behave... but they squandered them and burned any/all the good will they might have had.
And I'm not going to reverse their ban just so they can prove all over again that they shouldn't be allowed on site.
Only people I've ever banned for life are those annoying spambots!
Although, when it comes to actual members I must admit I have 'banned for life' a few only to reinstate them. Only in very serious circumstances though, i just like them to think about the error of their ways.
I've permanently banned people, but only after they have reached a point where they have proven through their own actions that they have no serious intention of trying to comply with forum rules (despite multiple moderator actions in the past that they have ignored). At that point, once they are gone they are gone - they are responsible for their own posts, and responsible for the consequences if those posts keep violating the rules.
I have had to ban a few people permanently before. Not without a good reason, of course.
Many of those that have been banned permanently joined from another forum that wasn't too fond of us at the time and spammed us. That was over a year ago and they have warmed up to us now, so I have allowed back a few members that were banned during that time for that reason.
I've banned people permanently for certain reasons (usually either trolling and flaming other members or being bots), but I've never had reason to lift one of these bans. Besides, if they're desperate enough to want to return, they'll probably sneak back in anyway under a different name.
Normally its on my clan forum and its when a bunch of other members request that so and so should be given a second chance. Sometimes its a good move, sometimes its a bad move. Its normally a gamble because you don't know the person or whether or not they have changed since they were banned for whatever reason they were banned for originally.
During my time online I've seen people really changing in the lapse of a few years, so i have yet to ban someone for life. I usually just give suspensions unless it has gone too far and the person has shown nil interest in becoming part of the community. So I'd ban for a few years instead, that way the person can come back for their second chance or move on (there is also the possibility our forum dies before the ban is lifted so in a ironic way that;'d been a permanent ban, hah.
One was perma-banned because he was constantly rude to staff and constantly breaking the rules. I had given him several chances to change his actions, but he'd go right back and do it again. I think that this person has a lot of growing up to do before it can be considered to let me come back.
Another person I have perma-banned was for trolling. He trolled me and he tried to troll my co-admin as well. I don't take to kindly to trolling so I perma-banned him. I also found out that this same person got banned off another site for similar actions so I know I won't be letting him back.
It's not something I enjoy doing, it's just something I feel obligated to do in order to save the ambiance of the forum and let the rest of the community discuss in peace. Plus, if you let people like that continue on in their ways then they will be discouraging people from joining or sticking around. So these few individuals can actually kill a forum if they are not dealt with.
