Create Unique Content - Write your own stuff, don't steal it.
Optimize Your Title Tags - Use your keywords in headings, titles, etc, and make sure they are properly marked as headings, titles, etc.
Create Compelling Meta Descriptions - This is the blurb that shows up on the google results, make the reader want to learn more and click the link.
Utilize key-word rich headings - See Optimizing title tags
Add alt tags to images - when uploading images you can add an alt tag, make sure your keyword is in the alt tag
Build internal links between pages - have your content relate back to previous content, such as "for more info read what I wrote about *state the topic* last week"
Update your site regularly - update your site regularly
