I am trying to do this in Gimp (which I have used for a while) and I really never figured out how to do this effect. Do I have to gradient each letter by itself and then do the outlining or is there a way to do the gradient without covering the holes of the "e" and "o" and "g" and the like?

i also use GIMP. It is possible to do but i think the easiest is just to gradient the text from white to transparent. this come out looking nice and web 2.0 looking as well

Photoshop tutorial shows them how to make a simple and also clean “Web 2.0 style” button sprite with a rollo ver state. They will also learn how to set up the sprite applying some basic CSS techniques.
