So I bet some of you didn't know there is a step you should take before making someone a moderator! In order for you to test a candidate for a moderating position your normally supposed to make them a Guide.

Guides are users who look for posts that do not follow guidelines and members who break guidelines and report to either a moderator already on the team or an administrator(you).

What is this doing you ask? This trains that user who wants to apply for a spot on the moderators team to get used to the guidelines for one and also to see how he/she handles certain things on the board.

For instance, checking to see if this user has good grammar when posting and if the user posts in a professional manner.

These users are placed in a regular group with the same permissions as a member would have.

Try it out sometime next time your looking for moderators. It may save you the time of having to fire a candidate that didn't work out for you or for the job. 😉

A moderator's role in any community shouldn't be exclusive to locating breaches in its user guidelines. While I'm not entirely averse to the notion of a Guide-like rank, I believe many of the qualities one would establish in his or her potential moderators via such a rank may also be noticeable before the user is promoted at all.

No, I believe it should, they have to be able to know a trouble maker when they see one.

My moderators are selected from my most active members and based on their political views in order to balance the ideology of the team.. works fine for me. Never had to fire a mod.

Someone who applies may seem good at first but you never know. The point of the guide rank is to test to see how he/she handles the job is all.

Just a safety precaution before giving the person full moderator abilities.

In my view, you shouldn't have to take a safety precaution. If you think someone REALLY is a good choice for moderator ( not someone who joined 3 days ago, made 45 posts, and sucked up to you ) then you should add them straight up. I don't just add mods, one of my staff nominates them, then we all vote. If I want to, I can just add someone without my teams consent, but I like to see what my team thinks of someone, as they know the members just as good as I do.

I'm with Irviding. While a Guide-like rank would be useful to test applicants, I dislike the idea of hiring moderators via application in the first place.
