First Impression is everything for 85% of the population. That's why you have to make the first impression the best. I am not going to talk about your web design, I am going to talk about how to properly market your website before you open it up to the public.
1. Put your site on lock, so that anyone who tries to access your site has to enter a password, no one except admins will be able to do that.
2. Create a blog, and post all your site updates there, including creating and editing the site design and etc.. make your blog url blog.yourwebsite.com or something, and make it accessible to anyone. The more you write the more your google pr will raise.
3. Get a twitter account. Just talk about random stuff there and get at least like 150+ followers which is really easy to do. Once you open your site you will announce your site there.
4. Create a digg account, post some random stuff there once you open up your site post it there.
5. Get some friends/people you know will join/admins/staff/etc... to go to your website (login) and chat (if its a forums website) make it have some content, before you open. If you open and its blank you are doomed. Get good amount of posts there.
6. Talk to popular bloggers (people who own popular high PR blogs) email them and tell them that you are opening up a website about (comment interest, example if your opening up a graphics forum you contact a graphics blog owner) and you tell them, so just tell them your opening up a website about graphics (or something) and tell them your grand opening is 1st of august (example) and that you would like to give them a sneak preview of your site before anyone else. This will make them special and let them login and see the site. If they like it they will post on their blog about your site oppening up, and that people should go there.
7. Write a press release saying that you are opening up a website about this and this and it will be the best and etc.. and post it in press release directories. Get a professional to write it. If its a good press release Google might put it in Google News.
8. Submit to search engines/directories/etc..
9. Post your grand opening date on forums/blogs/etc..
10. OPEN
If you do all of this you should get good amount of traffic your first day opening. The reason to do this is to get people hyped about your site. Hearing so much about it cant wait to see what was the fuss about, and you want people fussing about it asking around "when will it open up??" and etc..
Hope this little promotional tip helped you all,
