When I first opened my forum, I got a lot of spam. I think I was being targeted by someone doing blackhat as the attacks were constant. At some point, this stopped. I have not noticed anything since. Just wondering if your site was ever DDOS or attack in a similar way and how you dealt with the situation?
I've had my site affected by DDoS a fair bit because my site's host was attacked a lot. The host ended up going through multiple different DDoS protection companies before finding one that actually worked. (Since there are many different companies that promise protection but either aren't equipped to handle the demand or are over burdened or their configuration tools aren't refined enough to tweak and make changes to provide optimal protection.)
DDoS is an extremely difficult thing to deal with because:
1- it is ridiculously easy to pull off, if you know where to look. (Basically pay your money, pick your target, choose how strong the attack is/how long the attack lasts, commence attack.)
2- the strength of a DDoS attack is massive (easily within 5-20 gigabits per second range) which is usually more than enough to knock most sites offline.
3- it costs very little to launch an attack (sometimes as low as 5$).
4- attacks can last for hours (incredibly strong) or for months (weaker or intermittently).
5- there are no cheap and effective ways to mitigate DDoS. (The cheapest options are going to likely be 300-400$ a month.)
And there have been tons of different sites under attack recently and given how easy DDoS attacks are, it's only going to get worse.
As for how I dealt with it... I basically just had to wait those attacks out. There was nothing that could be done.
You have ddos & spam mixed up. Spam attack is a nuisance act that will litter your forum with junk or spam messages. A dos or ddos attack will knock your site offline, making it unavailable to other users
My site has never been targeted to be honest. I have seen people get their site hacked by people they annoyed online though, so I've always been a bit wary as far as security goes.
