Best Forum Software

My opinion:

IPB > MyBB > phpBB > SMF

I'm not even putting VB on the list because I don't use it very much and am not the best authority on it, but I do say that IPB is pretty impressive. Then there's MyBB which, although having a smaller community than others, has an incredibly easy and foolproof plugin system as well as some fancy ajax and javascript. Then phpBB3, which has a large community but is lacking in many things MyBB has.

Only my opinion.
Hold the phone you saying phpbb lacks features that mybb has???

Dude phpbb and smf both have more mods, themes, and features(well only smf) then mybb has.

I love mybb myself, but dude they do lack in a few areas.(Ofcourse they make it up with easy theme making and mod installing)

MyBB is the best out of the box though (out of those three) feature wise. If you can take a few hours to install phpBB3 mods yourself, then power to you. I'd rather be posting on my forums during those few hours though. 😛

In my opinion, for the best permissions that I have seen would be phpBB. For the quickest install of mod's, I would go with SMF.

Profile Comments system took me 30 seconds to install with MyBB. Beat that. 😛

I will list then:

• Reputation (if you on't like the 'only rate each user once', it takes 30 seconds to fix that (mod) 😛

• Quick reply (And a mod which makes it more advanced)

• Ajax thread rating (barley used, but still cool)

• Ajax quick edit.

• Plugins

• Did I say plugins yet? They are so awesome it counts as two reasons anyway.

• Better ACP (opinion)

To name a few.

With the way I have my backup, I can get the way my current forum is (all 100+ MODs and dozens of tweeks) by installing one MOD that I keep on my local hard drive. Includes Gallery, Myspace-like Profile, Portal, Download System, Moderation System, etc all installs by uploading the MOD and clicking twice. Not trying to say "My forum's **** is bigger than your forum's ****" as I'm not that type of person, but showing you what you can do.

As an administrator, I prefer something easy like SMF or MyBB, but as a user, I prefer PHPBB.

What do you mean by that exactly? Do you backup your entire forum via a modification? How did you achieve that?

Yes and everything you put smf has by default plus more mind you 😛. So for out of the box I would say SMF is best 😛.

It was all manually. I just compared the code in a default 1.1.11 install with the files of my forum, and packaged it as a MOD. The MOD takes up less space than a full backup. The only thing it doesn't have is the commands to add DB rows and tables, which I just need a DB backup for.

I've used both myBB and SMF, and SMF is slightly easier when it comes to adding mods, but more importantly, SMF probably have 10x the mods available over myBB. So I agree SMF wins hands down over any software out there when it comes to modding.

What I like about myBB more than SMF is the skins/theming. It's much easier to do than SMF.

Personally, I don't think anyone should be saying something is better than something else unless they've bothered to try it. A lot of people here seem to say things without having any real knowledge of the other software they are judging.

I installed SMF to test it a while ago, and all I thought was "meh". So, I did try it, I just hated it.
