What would you suggest as the best free alternative to XenForo?

phpBB, MyBB and Flarum are three options to choose from.

I personally recommend phpBB if you want features, but if you solely want discussion then Flarum is the way to go.

Out of all of them regards free then I would go with phpBB or even MyB. In fact I go with Vanilla as they are cool and good 😉 Also, vBulletin is another free good one to pick 🙂

You can try Forumotion or Proboards.

I would recommend Zetaboards but they were bought out by Tap-a-talk and now I'll no longer suggest that.

For free hosts Forumotion or Proboards years and years ago when I was 14 I used Forumotion, Software wise I used Mybb.

I don't recall ever using Proboards or Forumotion however I am a member on some sites with proboards, not bad software from a member's POV.

I personally like Simple Machines and MyBB when it comes to free forums. SMF just rolled out 2.1 back in February and it looks great!

As far as free software goes, the debate has typically been between phpBB and MyBB for as long as I can remember. You have to self-host these though. As far as free forum hosts go, I would recommend ProBoards. They’ve been around 20+ years. I don’t love everything about it, but I trust that they’re not going anywhere.

From experience, I'd use MyBB. phpBB is nice for simple forums but I like the UI and customization properties of MyBB more

MyBB is really good. A few things holding them back, lack of an officially supported responsive theme. And maybe an ageing code base.

  1. PHPBB: PHPBB is a popular open-source forum software that is widely used by many websites. It offers a wide range of features and customization options, and it is regularly updated and supported by a large community of developers.

  2. Simple Machines Forum (SMF): SMF is another open-source forum software that is popular for its simplicity and ease of use. It offers a range of features and customization options, and it is supported by a large community of users and developers.

  3. MyBB: MyBB is a free, open-source forum software that is known for its user-friendly interface and extensive customization options. It offers a range of features and is regularly updated and supported by a large community of users and developers.

  4. FluxBB: FluxBB is a lightweight, open-source forum software that is designed to be fast and easy to use. It offers a range of features and customization options, and it is supported by a large community of users and developers.
These are just a few examples of the many free forum software options that are available. It is important to research and compare different options to find the best fit for your needs.

I have used flarum in the past, took a bit to get used to but I enjoyed using it.

I think SMF is the best alternative to Xenforo, I have used SMF more than any other forum software.

SMF - OCHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh No flipping way

I like MyBB and phpBB3 the best when it comes to free forum software/scripts.

Out of all of them regards free then I would go with phpBB or even MyB. In fact I go with Vanilla as they are cool and good 😉 Also, vBulletin is another free good one to pick 🙂
Aye? vBulletin is not FREE. 😱
