best software

I have been using MyBB for some time, how ever my recent experience with phpBB is better thank MyBB.
MyBB is so eay to handle and you can install the plugins on the fly. phpBB, it is really hard to install plugins(mods) how ever considering the maturity of the software, the effort is work at the end of the day.
ForumPromotion is using phpBB, as a user point of view, FP is very user friendly.

Zetaboards is decent. I used it once for a past forum of mine. Nice range of themes and adding forum-wide things (such as sections) is simple. The general layout is appealing. One thing is the servers though. They will have downtime on some occasions and your free forum won't be accessible during these times. Although you can get your own custom domain/hosting to avoid this (I think) 😛

There is no form of specialised hosting on ZetaBoards that would get around downtime, and downtime nowadays is rare. It only happens if a server happens to get DDoS attacked, and that's started to become less frequent lately. Generally, if we have planned downtime, an announcement is made in advance and that downtime is usually done during quiet periods of the day to avoid disruption, but planned downtime hasn't happened in quite a long time now.Mikaya said:

For software alone... I like MyBB.
The core software is easy to set up and use. (Even installing without softaculous, or those sort of auto-installers, is easy.)
I find it fairly easy to create themes on. (If you can create a theme on a free forum host then you can make one on MyBB.)
Plugins are pretty easy to add (upload, enable in ACP, configure, done). There are also a wealth of good, free, plugins to enhance your forum in a variety of ways. (MyAlerts, MentionMe, Custom Alerts, Newpoints, Page Manager, xThreads, etc...)
About the only thing I'm not fond of for MyBB is there's no easy way to set permissions of one group for multiple forums at a time. (So if you want to adjust a registered member group being able to see forum 1, forum 2 and forum 3... you have to go to each of them and change them one at a time.)
For remote hosted forums...
I recommend Jcink over all others simply because no other forum host allows users to get copies of their database for free. With regular backups... that's a good feeling knowing that you'll never lose more than a certain amount of content on your site.
Plus you can transfer off Jcink any time you want. While other hosts now give admins that option to get bacups, they also tend to gate it behind a paywall.
Getting a copy of your database on:
- proboards?
Have to pay for their white label service for 6 months first before they'll let you get your database.
- IcyBoards?
Pay for one month's premium to take a copy of the database.
- InvisionFree?
Pay for your database based on size.
Others still don't even let you get a copy of your database. (Zetaboards, unless things have changed recently, still traps users...)
