Buying a tablet for my mom for her birthday this year. What are your thoughts on the best tablet for the price out currently on the market?

I'm currently looking into the Microsoft Surface Pro for myself simply because I like how it is more of an ultrabook convertible than a tablet.

I'd say the Surface is a really good tablet.

If she doesn't have an iPhone or iTouch, she might like an iPad but otherwise there's no need. You could get a smaller one (like a nook or kindle) but they aren't as nice, depending on what she'll use it for.

Surface does look amazing. Especially the Version of Windows it will be running!

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 inch, iPad 4, and Google Nexus 10 are all pretty good premium tablets.

Google Nexus 7, Amazon Kindle HD 7 inch, and iPad Mini are good budget tablets in the 7-7.9 inch category.

I'm not sure a Windows 8 Tablet is very good for a Touch based device if you plan on using a lot of Touch based apps since Android, iOS, and the Kindle Fire has a lot more popular free and paid apps for them than Windows 8.

I kind of find Android, and iOS easier to use on touch screens.

The best Windows Tablet would be the Razer's Edge Gaming Tablet.

I ended up going with a iPad mini. Thank you all for the suggestions!

I own a Surface (typing on it now) and it's amazing!

The iPad Mini is pretty good. I like that it has the same resolution as the iPad 2, so all apps which are made for the iPad 2 would look great on the iPad Mini.

I read recently a lot of paid apps in the apps store were being given away for free, or sold at a greatly discounted price to celebrate iOS App Store birthday.

Google Nexus is still pretty good, but it may be worth waiting for version 2 of the tablet which is supposedly being released sometime this year.

What is changing in the version 2?

From what I've read the most speculated features are 4G support and a 1080p display. 🙂

I literally brought the older Nexus about three weeks ago. xD
