What do you feel are the best topics for getting a dead board jumping and getting people involved in conversations??

That's one very good question, DANH, but I doubt there is than one "right" answer for it, lol.

I find much of this will depend on what kind of forum you have and what the members want. Obviously, not everybody is looking for the same thing so trying to narrow things down to "right" answers would be difficult.

For example, some members may jump right into an adult related zone looking for adult related chat while others may be completely turned off by those types of discussions, preferring to seek something more.....Martha Stewart like, lol.

Personally, I find that I receive most interest in my adult board topics at the moment but, then again, that is something that could literally change overnight depending on the memberbase.

Sometimes 'debate' type topics can go a long way, too, but they are also something you have to be very careful with. Considering the fact that some people tend to lose their cool means a friendly debate can turn into an all out heated war. This, of course, can have varied results in the end; boosting your forum right up or dwindling it right down. So much depends on what your members (at least the good majority of them) are truly interested in. Some would likely love to get into heated arguements while others would find arguing repulsive; everyone has their own individual tastes and personalities.

Have you ever actually asked "your" members this specific question in your forum itself? They might be your own best answer!

Consider this; you asked the question here and you already have a response (and surely you'll get some more) sooooo...

technically you've just started a new topic that has already turned into conversation.

See, you're already getting the job done, lol.

PS: Quick Tip:

Sometimes good answers can be better than good topics or questions.

Take the time to answer as many posts as you possibly can, reply to posts within a timely fashion and always reply with responses that show you sincerely care about the question to begin with. Someone who posts a message with "I just found out I have two weeks to live" doesn't "really" want to hear "That sucks" for a reply.

Good luck to you and I wish you much success!

The best kind of threads on my site are all the forum games or "who what when where why how" type questions..

I tend to find the filler threads very boring in my own opinion,
Try and avoid those..and if you can ask your members what they want discussed on the board that'll help..i've just recently done that on my board.

try and avoid the silly games which tend to fill a lot of boards like 'count to a 1000' and such.. yes it will bring you posts but will it be the valuable posts that potential members want to entice them to stay at your board?? you can only boast about how many posts your board has but in comparisons most people doing that don't realise the majority of their board posts is from the games section!

To the most important point about your board as i've just had a look..your boards name is ..'SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT'
now normally for me i'll be thinking all kinds of sports is discussed here but all i see is wrestling and American sports!

am not an expert in forums, but am just trying to help!

Thank you for your input,..I believe I have corrected this thanks to your input and I would appreciate it if you could take a moment to revisit and let me know what you think.

I believe it's (what I personally call) the current 'hot topics'

Mainly what is in the news, things that will get people talking, discussing opinions etc.

Currently the Maddie story (for anyone in UK and some parts of europe) certainly gets people posting as everyone has an opinion.

The best topic for activity on a forum really depends on the theme of the forum. If it's a forum that is themed Harry Potter than I would suggest threads and posts about Harry Potter. Maybe make a thread about the characters and their character growth throughout the series. Maybe make a thread about the differences between the movie and the books etc.

The best topics for activity for your forum would be topics relating to the theme of your forum. If it's an off topic forum than really any thread that will make people want to participate and discuss is valuable.

Again, it really depends on what the theme of the forum is and what sections are in need of bumping.

I'm not a dramatic person, but they do sometimes say drama makes the world go around, so drama is one thing that will probably rev up the activity on your forum. I suppose you can have toxic drama and healthy drama. By no means am I recommending drama be used to gain activity, but it's more of a random musing.

I can definitely see drama being a huge niche that could bring in activity. Though if you have a community full of drama, it'll probably get stressful to moderate after awhile. You'll also need to be in a good headspace too.

I think trending topic are the best topics for activity. People always like to interact with latest news and event.

What do you feel are the best topics for getting a dead board jumping and getting people involved in conversations??
It all depends on the subject matter of the forum, but some good topics that can get a forum active are comparison discussions.

For example:
  • 'Is Twitter better than Facebook?'
  • 'Is Bing the worst search engine? Why or why not?'
  • 'Who’s the best singer alive?'
  • 'Is rap music better than country?'

These are just examples, but they could help spark activity on a forum.

On my forums it's topics where there is money involved, especially regarding our freerolls.

On Christianity Haven, debate topics really take off, but my members want good theological conversations. There are a few who log in just for fellowship and enjoy the what's your favorite type of threads, but most of the members get annoyed with those over time.

I always tried to create topics centered around whatever the theme of the board was. If it was gaming in general, then topics about games, whether it was what I was playing at the moment or the latest news about games or whatever. If it was about Pokemon, then varying topics about Pokemon, the games, the anime, the manga, the trading cards, a little bit of everything. I always tried to focus a little more on boards that got a little less attention to try and spark some discussion there too and make it look a little more active, but it didn't always work out in the ways I'd hoped it would.
