Adding alt tags is a great way to make your site more accessible to visually impaired site visitors and allows Google search to properly identify what's going on in your site photos. This 'hidden text' is perfectly allowable so long as it's used for the purpose of describing the image, rather than keyword spamming. To create a good alt tag, you will want to be as specific as possible, keeping your alt tag description short and to the point (10-20 words).

Here's an example of alt tags.

no alt tag:

<img src="puppy.jpg" alt=""/>

Better alt tag

<img src="puppy.jpg" alt="puppy"/>

Best:

<img src="puppy.jpg" alt="Dalmatian puppy playing fetch">

To be avoided: keyword stuffing

<img src="puppy.jpg" alt="puppy dog baby
dog pup pups puppies doggies pups litter puppies dog retriever
labrador wolfhound setter pointer puppy jack russell terrier
puppies dog food cheap dogfood puppy food"/>

You should also submit your images from your articles to various search engines. There are plenty of pages/articles that get thousands of views just by having an image on Google's first page (for images) for a relevant search term.

Wouldn't the search engines pick them up automatically when their spider crawls the site? Google being the main search engine, they don't allow you to upload directly. Here is something that explains it. A spider crawls the website and you have to wait for Google to see it.

Sorry, I should clarify. I do not mean upload images to Google. For the record, they DO have image services which allow you to host images for free. I simply mean that it's important to include images in your content, and make sure you do everything you can to speed up the crawling process.

You can submit URLs of pages to Google, and other search engines.
