What was the biggest mistake you have made with your website (forum/blog, etc)?

My biggest mistake in the past was being too worried about becoming a big board and being too competitive.

Let's break that down!

I was stats crazy back then! I'd constantly look at my stats and create new topic after new topic. I mean I do that now as the forum owner but not as much as I was back then. I'd try to create at least 50 to 100-new topics a day! Yeah, a DAY! It was because I was obsessed with statistics and wanted to be the biggest. I think that it was overwhelming to the community and made members inactive.

And I feel being too competitive is a bad thing especially now that forums are in a sense, a dying form of online community. Look at brands on social media... They're are not trying to block one and another from their pages, instead, competition is teaming up and collaborating-sharing traffic and creating loyal fans because of it. Back then, we'd ban competition and disallow their links on our forum. I really think that is a mistake. Now forums are little to none. We need to team up and really support each other so we can continue!

We might get another shot due to all the privacy controversy on social.

My biggest mistake was to give too much away about my real identity. That was a lifetime ago and it took a while to repair the damage but I'm sure I'm not the only forum owner who has had their admin decisions result in unwarranted real world problems.

On a lighter note, one of my forum admins took it upon himself to improve our security by uploading ZoneAlarm to our entire server rack. At that time (and it may still do) ZoneAlarm by default installed with all ports blocked thus locking everyone out of the servers.

I had to fork out a fair bit of money to send in an engineer but taking the proverbial pee out of the admin concerned made it worth every penny 😀

also keeping it active
I think that will be your biggest score for SEO too.

Google and other search engines LOVE new content.

Social platforms are out of the new content phase and now they are trying to make money but Google is always thriving for something new to index because that's what Google does after all.

So I'd put 90% focus on content creation and 10% on SEO

Still got to do the SEO work to get a site notice and indexed, so I'd say....60 40 on new posts to SEO work.

My biggest mistake is going full power into the site in the first place without knowing what I was really wanted and doing. ANd also spending way too much money ;P But it was fun, and over the years you improve and learn and whatnot and make it better.

Everyone makes mistakes and you make it how it is. Learn.

Choosing the wrong domain extension for my personal blog was the biggest mistake I have made.
