On my forum, I've celebrated birthdays for loyal forum members for years now. We have a happy birthday thread and most times, members will post flashing birthday related gifs and well wishes. But, also I have given digital gifts, such as forum perks or email gift certificates, such as for Amazon or Kindle. It's a nice way to recognize a valuable part of the community.

I just do a simple happy birthday thread, where staff and members alike can wish a person celebrating a birthday a happy birthday. Not everyone is who they say they are online, so sometimes a thread can be more than enough. Me personally, I'm happy with just a thread, really.

We do that too.

On a few occasions, a member has entered a fake birthday and we're all saying happy birthday for no reason. 😛

This is why I do just a simple thread. No point in going through all the trouble of trying to send them something in the mail say, on June 1st, when in actuality the members' birthday isn't until June 28th, for example. That was just an example, by the way, I've never tried actually mailing anyone anything, and I'm not starting now, because like I said before and you basically hit the nail on the head, it's too risky in the first place.

Same here. That's more than enough, imo. No point in going too far as buying virtual/real gifts. xD

I am working to develop/find something for IPB that changes a users rank bar and usertitle to a birthday one on their birthday

Honestly, while buying virtual/real gifts is a generous offer and I'm sure something almost anyone would appreciate, I also think that something like that can be taken too far as well...

Giving of gifts to members, irregardless of whether or not it is a physical item, to show appreciation towards someone, is always a good thing to do.

I was doing it for awhile, but due to my 2 year absence from the internet in general, I got out of the habit of giving online gifts.

Back when I had a forum and staffed for some, the most we did was a birthday thread. I hadn't ever heard of actually giving the member something such as a digital gift. It's a nice gesture, though.

The standard gift is to make a thread or post about the birthday at the forum. That's the least thing we can do and it gives impression that we care about our members. Virtual gifts like virtual birthday cards or video message can be done when the member is special, or even sending real gifts. I never did anything beyond a thread or post, though. Those are good options if the member is very special or very trustworthy.
