It appears that if the lightbulb is not lighted yet, then it will appear to be an opaque, black object. But when on, the transparency is visible because of the light passing through. Black lightbulbs usually have to be extremely powerful because since black absorbs all colors of light, any black material can end up diffusing a lot of light. I could be wrong though because this is tough to explain in actual words.
