Do you block proxies or VPN'S on your forum? If so, what's your reasoning?

I have never done this as I find my students use proxies as schools block forums.
I am also aware that some countries block certain sites.

I'm not sure that proxy blockers can be that effective. Personally I don't recommend using them. I think the most they offer is a false sense of security. The best approach is to investigate any members who are acting suspiciously. If they are using a proxy, that's one piece of evidence you can use in determining if they're only there to cause trouble, or are evading a ban.

I think it's pretty useless blocking these things, everyone uses them. 😛 It's just wasting your time, all though I also allow ban evaders to "evade" their ban on most occasions (unless they sexually harassed people, etc.) so I usually don't have anything to worry about.

On forums I've owned in the past I haven't blocked proxies or VPNS. If a user is going to take the effort to register a new account with a proxy and a new email address, then they will find a way, be it a new proxy, VPN or whatever.

Banning proxies and VPNs outright offers nothing but a false sense of security, and will cause nothing but problems for potential new members who otherwise rely on them due to restrictions placed on them at work, school or the government.

I personally don't care either way if a member uses a proxy or a VPN. We're there to chat & have a good time, not to stalk people.... If members want to feel more secure about their privacy, using a VPN is the way to go.
