So far with my forum, I have invested money into a domain name (for three years now) plus monthly hosting and related expenses. I don't really think the forum has even come close to paying for itself, though it was and is a labor of love. My blogs on the other hand are hosted on Blogger and I've easily earned enough Adsense from these sites to justify the small time invested. So far, I have not actually put any money into my blogs, though I considered buying a domain name for one of the blogs. So for me, a blog has been cheaper to run and monetize. In your experience, would you consider a blog or forum more economical or cheaper to run?

Cheaper?

A blog.

A forum will usually have more people connected and doing actions whether posting new topics, replying, searching, shoutbox, changing profiles and so on. (burning up hosting resources)

A blog is quite simple... read, comment, search....at your own pace 🙂

Blog is much more cheaper to operate. Starting from advertising to earning money through blogs, they just do not need much to be done. Whereas forum requires a lot of things to keep up for gaining visitors and making them join the community.

Forums are cheaper if you find a free host. 😉 There are a lot of them out there.

I'd say blogs.

Probably any blog (even one with lots of readers/commenters) can probably do just fine on any host's basic plan.

Until you get 3 active members at least...
We must be thinking about different things. I've run my RP site for three years on a free forum host. I have 1,000+ registered accounts.

Yep blogs are cheaper, can be really profitable.
Discussion sites more investment, but they can generate enormous amounts of money if that's what you're also interested in.
